Kubuntu 8.10 and Asus EEE

Loaded Kubuntu from flash drive. Everything great except wireless.
I do have a valid wireless connection with the Asus OS.
Kubuntu network manager reports 'No carrier'.
I'm using the connection name from Asus and auto-connect.
I don't know what the entries would be for manual connection.

Appreciate any help.

Is the wireless card detected at all by default in 8.10? (you used to have to build the driver manually in 8.04, which is what I am still using in my half broken eee)
