    Wireless BCM4318

    Hi all,

I recently updated to Kubuntu 8.10 KDE 4.1and I cannot connect wirelessly to the Internet. I turned the wireless card on by:
    Code:
    sudo lshw -c network
    which returned
    Code:

      Re: Wireless BCM4318

I had a similar problem, have you tried ndis wrapper/windows wireless drivers to install the drivers for the wireless card?

        Re: Wireless BCM4318

Also on x86_64 here. my 4318 worked by simply:
        • installing the fwcutter, with prompted to download firmware automatically
        • restarting to reload the b43 module
        • using knetworkmanager to connect

knetworkmanager doesn't show any available wireless networks for you?

          Re: Wireless BCM4318

          I did a reinstall of b43-fwcutter
          Code:
          sudo apt-get install --reinstall b43-fwcutter
I still can't connect my wireless. The blue light is light up, but it won't connect. knetworkmanager complains saying that wlan0 is unmanaged. How do I go about to manage my wireless? I can't even get it to see my network connection.

I can see it, and my neighbors, but I can't access it. I do have it encrypted.

              Ina konsole, enter:
              Code:
              dpkg -l wpasupplicant
Paste the response. Sounds like either wpa_supplicant is not installed or has not been activated.

For what it's worth, when I installed b43-fwcutter in my 8.04 system, I did it via adept. It installed the b43-fwcutter package, downloaded and installed the firmware file, started knetworkmanager, started kdewallet, and setup wpa_supplicant. I would have thought that dpkg would do the same, but obviously it didn't. (kdewallet holds the pre-shared key to activate the network, and asks for a password, not the PSK, on boot to activate the network).

                Re: Wireless BCM4318

Kmanager wasn't doing it thing, so I went to get Wicd "wicked"
                Code:
                wget -q [url]http://apt.wicd.net/wicd.gpg[/url] -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wic
After Wicd installed, I could now see my WPA connection. When I try yo connect, Authentication fails and I can't connect.

                So I...
                Code:
                sudo apt-get install wpasupplicant
                Giving me:

Sorry, never used wicd. You might search the forum here for "wicd", a lot of people swear by it.

                      Re: Wireless BCM4318

It would appear that wpa_supplicant may be confused or somehow your WPA preshared key is not being fed properly to your router.

The first thin I would do is to comment out everything in /etc/network/interfaces starting with "auto wlan0" and below

                      Code:
                      sudo cat /etc/network/interfaces

                      # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
                      # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

                      # The loopback network interface

                      wpa-psk <my psk>
If wpa_supllicant is correctly setup, the interfaces file doesn't need an entry for wlan0. The wpa_supplicant command plus the wpa_supplicant config file has all the values that are needed. Or at least that's what should happen.

Again, don't remove the entries, just comment all the lines starting with "auto wlan0" and all the lines below that.

                      Then reboot and try again.

I tried it, but I still can't connect. I revered back to the original setting. Restarted my computer. I did connect wirelessly, but it was to my neighbors connection. I just can't seem to get connected to my WPA connection... I'm thinking of changing it to WEP, but then I would have to change 9 others systems.

                          Don't do WEP -- it's a hacker's paradise!!

Your system is not authenticating because the router is not seeing the PSK for some reason, which could be anything from a typo to just not sending it! wpasupplicant requires either a wpa_supplicant. conf file or needs to use the wpa_cli script to generate the equivalent entries. The wpa_supplicant.conf file is normally located in /etc/wpa_supplicant directory. If you do
                          Code:
                          man wpa_supplicant.conf
, there are example entries that can be used.

On my current system, wpa_cli is called during the boot process. On my previous Kubuntu 7.10, I used a wpa_supplicant.conf with good success. If you are up to it, try to set up a wpa*.conf file, with commented out interfaces file.

                          You can also use
                          Code:
                          sudo iwconfig
on the command line with various parameters that would be used in wpa*.conf to see man see if you can get a response from your router. I've not used that particular process, but it been referenced here in other threads -- apparently with success.

One of these methods should get you connected whether you use wicd, knetworkmanager, or some other tool. It's just a matter of ensuring that your computer is sending wpa-related configuration info to your router such that your router understands what is being sent.

OK, let me search for a minute...I have the same card, and it is a problem with the order that the drivers are loaded, so I found a script that I use to shut down both wired and wireless cards, and reload them, and it works great...I am not at home, so hopefully I can find it on my work computer...be right back!

Found it! Make sure you have the restricted driver 'wl' installed and try:

                              Code:
                              sudo modprobe -r b43 b44 ssb wl
                              sudo modprobe wl
this should bring the wireless up...assuming all the other trouble shooting hasn't uninstalled something (I didn't read the entire thread)...if that works, then do this as root:

                              Code:
                              echo -e '#ssb workaround\ninstall wl modprobe -r b43 b44 b43legacy ssb; modprobe --ignore-install wl $CMDLINE_OPTS; modprobe ssb; modprobe b44;' | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/wl
Which will make it work at boot.
