Head spinning from wireless "solutions"!

I've just installed 8.04. I have no problem connecting with my wired Ethernet adapter, but I can't get a reliable connection with my Netgear WG111v2. I've done several searches, but all of the results give different solutions and none of them were for Hardy - always for prior versions. What's even more frustrating is I've seen posts where this adapter is supposed to work out of the box! Can someone please point me to the definitive setup info for my adapter under Hardy? I'll provide any config info requested.

Hmm, what is the output from

Run from terminal

sudo lshw -C network

Please attach long logs as a txt file..

Have you tried to use KnetworkManager for configuration of the wifi-connection?

KnetworkManager is the app that comes with Kubuntu, correct? If so then yes I have tried that. I've also installed the KWifiManager, but that didn't help either. In some of my searches I've heard that having both of them installed might cause problems. Is that true?

The adapter is recognized by the OS, but I can't get a connection to stay up for more than a few minutes. When I try to reconnect it hangs at 28%.

Yes I think it is the default app.

I don't know about that, but better be safe than sorry

If I were you, I would try to change the router settings in some way.

Maybe the channel used, other encryption or maybe firmware upgrade of the router. This could be a router problem.. but I am just guessing here.

Unfortunately the same happens to me every now and then with knetworkmanager. It has proved to be a right royal pain the behind for many a poor soul. Lots of people swear by wicd.

Well, still no luck.

I installed Wicd along with several pythion updates that were automatically installed, and rebooted. The adapter didn't work at first, but after a few minutes it became enabled and I was able to browse the Internet for about 5-10 minutes before it stopped working. Now neither the wireless or wired adapter are enabled at boot and Wicd will not launch at all. In the System Settings/Network Settings control panel I cannot even manually enable either adapter. I get the error message "Could not parse the XML output from the network configuration backend".

I'm about ready to reinstall everything from scratch, but I don't think that's going to help. Would Ubuntu 8.04 be a better starting point and then worry about KDE later?

Is wireless support for 8.10 any better?

Well, it could be that your wireless card simply is not all that well supported.

To find out which card you have:

lspci

Google the result and see whether there are any issues with it and ubuntu. If it is easy to fix, fix it. If not I'd download a few other distros such as Mepis, MintLinux or what have you and check how they support your card...

Well, it turns out that there are two versions of the WG111v2 adapter. One has a RealTek chipset that does not work out of the box. Of course that's the one I have. > A bit of tweaking is required to get it work. I have an older USB wireless adapter that I'll use to try to avoid all of that tweaking.
