Another Noob with a wireless issue.

HI all, just getting into the Kubuntu thing - so far so good. Everything running fine apart from the wireless - now i know there is a lot around on this because i have spent the last 4 hours trolling the forums and trying out various fixes and suggestions but no joy as yet.

Details - i am using a Netgear WN121T Usb card in the pc - i notice this is not in the list of supported Netgear devices in Kubuntu. I have noticed that some have got it working though.

I have run through the setup of ndiswrapper and ndisgtk - both are installed without any issues.

I have downloaded and installed the .inf files for my card supplied in this link http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=537281 as all the other downloads i could find were .exes.

Windows Wireless networks successfully installed the inf files - and the result displaying is the name of the file (wn121t) and the text "Hardware Present:Yes" - now some of what i have read stated that there should also be text stating "Driver Present" - this does not appear so it may be a starting point.

When using Wireless Assistant i am getting unfortunately what a lot of people are getting - "No usable wireless devices found."

I am not much good with the command line as i have been a windows guy for many years but would really appreciate any help you guys can give and i am more than happy to run commands you would like me to and post the results for you. Hope to get this sorted soon.

O.K., now please open a konsole and enter

lspci -v

and then enter

ndiswrapper -l

(that's the letter "l", not the number "1") and post the results of both here in codeboxes (use the "#" tag from the tools in the "Post Reply" box).

You are lucky ! I couldn't find ndisgtk or Wireless Assistant ! Can anyone suggest why ? (I installed Kubuntu 8.04.1)

I had no problem finding ndiswrapper or ndisgtk. I used Adept within Kubuntu itself, simply typed in ndisgtk and selected "Request Install" as usual - and job done.

What i have found though is that a lot of people seem to forget that to use Adept properly and find this stuff they need to be on the internet at the time. If you were not on the internet when looking for it that is probably why you cant find it

Anyone got any further ideas on my issue?

A small tip that I have found useful: When given command line directions, right click on the line and choose "copy". Then open the Terminal (I do it in another desktop) and point to the line after the prompt and right click again and choose "paste". Then hit "return" and allow the Terminal to run the line of instructions. Work back and forth with "copy" and "paste" until all the lines are run. I have found that this reduced the incidence of typos for me. Hope this helps.
