sorry i haven't had time to follow up on this issue lately.
been (and still am) pretty busy.

So I set up another server about 2 weeks ago and it is only serving out /home via nfs.
It has not had any problems. Note that it is also using nfs-kernel-server not user-server.

very good.
it seems the kernel space servers is the actual way to do nfs, anyway.
the user space stuff could have been an interesting test to run.
but the kernel space stuff is the actual officially supported stuff.
so...

So, seems something might be wrong with something else on the main server ,
or this is going to jinx me and it will hang tomorrow

unfortunately i have no experience with gnu/linux setups like yours in the real world.
it could well be that you simply had to many services running on the same machine
and the overload triggers some bug that wouldn't otherwise be triggered in normal
circumnstances...
