Can not make simple network work

Trying to make Ibex work with my just-released Asus G45 mobo. Used Debian for ten years but can't figure out the official Kubuntu way of setting up a simple ethernet connection with manual IP. I occasionally get it working, having edited the /etc/network/interfaces file, but on next reboot the interface is there but no IPV4 address. Also it seems to be trying DHCP, and it has an IPV6 address, but I did not set either in interfaces.

I can't believe there is no documentation. Looked everywhere on kubuntu.org and system help files for the official way to set up networking, and nothing.

Tried setting up a connection in Network Manager, with a clear interfaces file, and it has no effect. WTF?

What ethernet chip came with that mobo? One of these?:

There nothing special about networking with Kubuntu. It's standard Debian Linux, AFAIK. This should be all the documentation you need:

For ethernet it's loading a module called r8169.

        Ya, that's Gnome.

Beginning to suspect the driver being loaded is not the best one.
