Making sure speed is at max

Hey everyone, wanting to know if I have my connection speed fully taken advantage of. I have a cable connection, going through a Linksys wireless g/n router, and then my laptop is connected to wireless with 54 MB/s potential. I want to see if there is any way to change/check/optimize connection speed for downloads. Thanks to anyone who has suggestions or solution

I've heard of people tweaking mtu and things like that, but as long as your not running in mixed mode on the router, ie, N and G and have n and g devices then the default settings should have you there at the top.

so if the laptop runs n set the router to run only n. also you check your speed with
    Code:
    iwlist [interface] scan
and it should give you the speeds and connection strength for the device
