Atheros 802.11(?)G wireless not working SOLVED!!!

As of now, I have wifi on linux now! (No amount of typed words could express my joy!)

And, for all of you who may be having the same problem with Atheros drivers, here's what I did:

By the way, this is on Kubuntu 8.04.1 with KDE 3.5.9 and the wireless card is a AR242x wireless G.

First off, you need to download the following file:
    snapshots.madwifi.org/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6/

Then, extract the folder (it doesn't matter where).

Next, you need to open the extracted folder, and then open the folder inside it. When opening this folder, you should see various other folders, as well as a few texts documents. When in this folder, look on the right-hand side of dolphin and click "open terminal here".

Now that we've got the terminal open, you need to input the following commands, preferably one at a time.

    make

    sudo make install*

*you must do this, or else permission to the folders make install is trying to access is denied.

    sudo modprobe ath_pci

    sudo reboot

And hopefully, it will work for you. It is working for me now, and I couldn't be more pleased! That's one more thing I won't need Vista for...

    Open a console and type:
    Code:
    lspci | grep Ethernet
Copy and paste the results. This will tell us which network controllers are in your PC. We won't need to worry about the wired controller, but the output will tell us which wireless controller you have.

      Here you go:

02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8039 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (rev 15)
06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)

Re: Atheros 802.11(?)G wireless not working

You have the exact same wireless controller that I do. Open Adept Manager > Adept > Manage Repositories and make sure that you have the restricted repository active. Also, boot into Windoze and check the wireless settings there. Make sure that there is not a software control that 'turns off' wireless on shutdown. If there is such, set it so that the wireless remains active when shutting down Windoze.

May seem like a stupid question, but how come under 7.10 (32 and 64 bit) and Windoze, my Atheros was a AR5007, but under 8.04, it's the same AR242x your showing on your terminal

Re: Atheros 802.11(?)G wireless not working

Hmm...in Adept Manage Repositories, all boxes in the first tab are "X"-ed. Is there something I need to specifically download? Or do I need to simply check a box in one of the other tabs?

...and I couldn't find anything controlling when the Wireless shuts down. But judging from the way it acts when I shut down Windows, it is turning off.

As for your question Yulester, I'm not too sure.

Re: Atheros 802.11(?)G wireless not working

I also have a Phillips brand Atheros pci card AR 5413 (02:00.0 0200: 168c:001b (rev 01)) and this worked OOTB with the restrcited drivers and network manager. The power and activity lights do not come on at all under 8.04 (unlike in XP) but the card works flawlessly. Not critical but some help to get my lights back would be appreciated

Re: Atheros 802.11(?)G wireless not working

I'm not getting that lucky - - as usual

Default Atheros Driver doesn't work in this system - - never did regardless. Under 7.10 64 bit, I could get something to work, Under 8.04, I had to try the ndiswrapper/xp driver setup, but that didn't work

Now I'm working with the madwifi latest version. I't supposed to work under the current 2.6 Kernel and 64 bit. It appears to be installed, but I can't see it under ifconfig, iwlist, and wicd can't seem to see it - - - So I'm back on the hunt

                    I'm checking it out

Looking at all the possibilites, bat at this point, I can't confirm madwifi is actually installed and running.

Okay, I now think that the wireless is working, but the light isn't on. Fortunately, I have moved into my dorm room. The dorm rooms at my college use wire connections, so wireless isn't a problem for now. However, it would not connect to my wireless at home. I'll try the potential solution linked above at a later time.

Neither is mine. In fact, I installed Kubuntu on a Lifebook some year ago, and did not notice that the wireless was on before I saw the upgrade triangle.

I've tried some methods to get the light flashing, but gave it up, Did not work.

And the two first weeks in August my Atheros card (SMC) did not work. Fixed in core ~21, it seems.

Do you mean you have found a working way to the lights?

Nope - - didn't work. Still getting HAL Status 13 messages in dmesg, and no indication it exists.

HAL Status 13 supposedly means my hardware isn't recognized??
