WPA works great in Ubuntu, but not in Kubuntu

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop, and WLAN works great. There's excellent WLAN support builtin. I expected that the same thing would apply for Kubuntu, since I figured it is built on the same foundation as Ubuntu. Alas, under Kubuntu there' no support for WPA. There's only an option for WEP. WEP as you surely know, is not an option that has been safe for many years, if ever.

This puzzled me. So instead of a clean install of Kubuntu, I installed Ubuntu and "apt-get install kubuntu-desktop" on top of that. Unfortunately, that wrecked the WLAN so it doesn't work under Gnome anymore either. Seems only a clean install of Ubuntu will make me able to use WPA.

I'm curious if I may have missed something? Is Ubuntu the safer choice? Any plans for getting Kubuntu WLAN support up to the same standard as Ubuntu?

    Thanks.

Not true. I'm running three versions of Kubuntu on my laptop, all using KNetworkManager, and I have a wireless router (Linksys WRT54G) setup to use WPA Encryption (AES) and I have no problems.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

OK, that's good to hear. It must be a local problem here then. I'll investigate further.

      Thanks for the feedback.

Check to see that you have wpasupplicant installed.
        Code:
        sudo apt-get install wpasupplicant

          Hi. Thanks.

I now have an option for WPA in Knetworkmanager, but it disappears as soon as I set a static IP address. DHCP is not an option here. Any ideas?

Don't use Knetworkmanager to make your settings. Use the network settings module in System Settings. Many don't like Knetworkmanager for wireless, opting to use Wlanassistant or Wicd instead.

Before making any settings, check your /etc/network/interfaces file and if it has any entires in it regarding your wireless comment them out.

            Everything except:

            Code:
            auto lo
            iface lo inet loopback
            address 127.0.0.1
            netmask 255.0.0.0
            should be commented out.

After making your settings, restart the network.
            Code:
            sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Success ! Wicd fixed it, I could enter the static IP and was up and running in no time !

Many thanks for your help ! Also thanks to the others that chimed in !

Yeah, awesome feeling! Also, it's my first brush with 64bit desktop computing, which I find liberating. Been banging my head against the 32bit ceiling for a while in XP. And 64bit Windows is not an option for me for many reasons. I must say I'm impressed how slick Linux has gotten the later years. I can actually see myself running it fulltime now!

My laptop is 100% Linux. That is to say, that the primary OS's installed (three) are Linux (Kubuntu). Within two of them I have installed VMware Player, in which I've installed Win XP Pro (I still need M$ for Quicken). I've been very happy to have been able to dump M$. Linux ROCKS!

Yup, I also need to run Windows for testing purposes at work, so I'll invest in a copy of VMWare workstation for that. Indeed Linux ROCKS!
