Wireless connects to router but not beyond

My laptop, using a wireless connection, connects to my router without any difficulty. (This is under Kubuntu 8.04.) However, it intermittently is unable to connect to anywhere else -- even machines on my local network that are wired into the router. Moreover, my cabled machines connect just fine to the rest of the world. I test all of this using ping.

What might account for this difference between connecting to the router and connecting beyond it, given that cabled machines have no such difficulty?

Are you running virtual box on your laptop? I know that on mine because I use the bridged networking I cannot have it running.

When it stops working, type "route" at a konsole to see if it has a default gateway. Also try "host www.google.com" to see if your DNS resolution is working.

What wireless hardware are you using?
