    Samba problems

I have some problems with my samba client. It was working before, but it doesn't work now. I can see the workgroup, but I can't see the computers in it, even if I type it in like smp://computer-name or smb:/computer-name.

I tried reinstalling samba, turned off firewall, but it didn't work. The windows machines see each other well though.

I tried some more. It's because I configured my router to use OpenDNS. If I disable it, then I see the network. But it is strange that Windows computers see each other even with the router using OpenDNS.

    Anyone experienced something similar?

      Re: Samba problems

If you use static IP addresses, try adding an lmhosts file (starts with a lower-case "L") in the same directory where smb.conf lives, and be sure the "name resolve order" line in smb.conf includes lmhosts as one of the options, e.g.,

name resolve order = lmhosts host bcast

This solved a problem for me where the Win boxes could see each other and the Linux boxes, but the Linux boxes couldn't see anything but themselves.

Try "man lmhosts" for information on constructing the file.
