    [SOLVED] Wireless Connection Error

I recently began using Kubuntu for my daily computer needs and have been surprised by how much seemed to just work. I have only one problem and that is my wireless network connection. I have tried many different wireless monitors and none of them have worked. They seem to fail during the DHCP configuration. I am easily able to connect to my neighbors networks (unsecured, but when I try to connect to my own, I am unable to. Using KNetworkManager, I progress to 28% (I have seen this error elsewhere, but none of the solutions helped me.) My neighbors have unsecured networks, but mine is under WEP, so this might be the problem. I can succesfully hardwire to the router if I need to. I have already edited my interfaces file.

I have an Inspiron E1405 Dell laptop.
    My router is a Belkin #F5D8230-4 pre-N.
You can see my wireless card below.

I will now post the output of the commands I find relevant.

    Code:
sam@sam@kubuntu:~$ iwconfig wlan0 #this is my neighbors network, I'm succesfully connected

    Re: Wireless Connection Error

I have a very similar problem. However I can't connect to either encrypted or unencrypted network. When trying to connect with KNetworkManager, it stops at 28%, then fails after a time. With wlassistant, it immediately fails with the encrypted network, and has a timeout with the unencrypted one, then it fails.
The same network on the same machine works well under Windows.

Here is my wlassistant log. First I tried to the encrypted network, then disabled encryption on the router and retried.
    Code:
    peet@peti-lenovo-linux:~$ sudo wlassistant

      @OzoneNerd

For knetworkmanager to work your /etc/network/interfaces must not contain anything but:
      auto lo
      iface lo inet loopback
If there is any other stuff in there it will kack out out you...

      @petersohn

Check your /etc/network/interfaces as well, please.

        Re: Wireless Connection Error

        That didn't help me.
Strange that when I try wlassistant from the start menu, it doesn't throw me out immediately for the encrypted network as it does when I run it from command line. It does the same as with unencrypted networks.

          . . .
If you look at the last item in my shell output. You will find that my /etc/network/interfaces already is how you say it should be. Peter, do you use the same 3945ABG network card as I? (If you don't know how to check run lspci)

I have tried to use ndiswrapper, and it did not help. I have tried the solutions involving modprobe.

My wireless work quite well in other distros, so if anyone knows of any Ubuntu/Kubuntu (It doesn't work in Ubuntu either) changes to the wireless interfaces, please tell me. Otherwise, I will have to switch to these distributions. I don't want to do this, but I will if I must.

            Re: Wireless Connection Error

Thanks, now I've found it There is some weird output when you tried "sudo dhclient wlan0" which may be at the root of your problem.
==>stderr: There is already a pid file /var/run/dhclient.pid with pid 134519072
Delete /var/run/dhclient.pid and try knetworkmanager first. If not successful, do a dhclient...

              [[Solved]] Wireless Connection Error

Righto, after a couple months of random attempts. I have figured it out.

I made two fixes, so I don't know which one fixed it. Peter, try run the following commands.

              Code:
              sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-hardy-generic

              sudo rmmod -f iwl3945
              sudo modprobe iwl3945 disable_hw_scan=1

sudo shutdown -r now #This will restart your compy.

It doesn't work for me. Note that for the driver I use a windows driver emulator.

Okay, I uninstalled the win driver, and did what you just said. But what should I do now to make the driver automatically start with the system?

You never said if you were using a 3945ABG card like I. If you are, then uninstall ndiswrapper, cause you have no need for the windows driver.

                    If you don't have a 3945ABG card, then I can't help you.
