    wireless won't connect

I've just upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04. At the time of the upgrade the wireless was working and it was used to down the upgrade. After rebooting the wireless quit working. the wireless assistant shows the router, the essid and the signal strength but will not connect. I've looked at the prior posts and attempted to follow their examples with no joy. I've notice that wmaster0 and eth1 have the same hardware address. HWaddr 00-19-D2-68-4F-7C-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 see below.

    Any suggestions.
Thanks in advance for the help.
    John B.

when I run iwconfig I get the following response
    lo no wireless extensions.

    Re: wireless won't connect

Hi - I havn't solved my no-connect problem yet at all, and it is similar to yours. Only I had perfect wifi after upgrading, but then something seems to have happened.

At least you get the eth1 (not the wlan0 that I am getting, for some reason)

    Could you enter lshw
(You don't need the sudo for the shorter output (man lshw will tell you that this outputs information about your system.)

Almost at the bottom there is the line that starts like this
    configuration: driver=
Could you tell me please: What do you get after the = sign?

By the way, did you try the
    sudo ifconfig eth1 up

      Re: wireless won't connect

      Kle,
Thanks for responding. I've tried the sudo ifconfig eth1 up and no joy. You asked for the information after the driver = and here it is

      driver=iwl3945 latency=0 module=iwl3945 multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11g

Does the IEEE 802.11g adapt to an IEEE 802.11b. I have an old router and I believe its IEEE 802.11b.

      Thanks again for the help.

        Re: wireless won't connect

I have an ASUS F3Jr Notebook and the wireless is working for some weeks now but my memory on what I had to do is vague. With ifconfig my wireless is on wlan0. I configured it by using System Settings > Network Settings and then selected the wlan0 and configured it with the TCP/IP address automatic. I found that if I set the IP address manually it would not work. You will also need to define the Wireless ESSID and WEP key in order to connect.

I tend to reboot to make sure all is well from a fresh start as you could alternately do the disable/enable interface option. As I have a home network with two other PCs connected via Ethernet cable with a fixed IP address, I find it frustrating to not have a fixed IP address for my Notebook. I solved this problem by changing my wireless router so that it only allowed a DHCP connection for the IP addess that I wanted. So I can now bring up my computers in any order.

I also find it convenient to install knemo to monitor the interface traffic and monthly usage.

I hope I have not led you astray and that you can get connected.

          Re: wireless won't connect

          Hello both

I'm afraid I am out of the discussion for a few days as I have 'nuked' my hard drive experimenting with something else, and will have to wait to reinstall.

I can't read anything sinister out of your driver. When I google it + Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Hardy there are quite a lot of hits. YOu might look at them.

Wether a IEEE 802.11g driver can handle IEEE 802.11g protocol? I don't know. I should imagine it can.

            Re: wireless won't connect

            NoWorries,
thanks for the tip. I've set up my router per your directions. That was easy. But when I went to system settings>network there was no entry for wlan0, only eth0 and eth1. Both of those seem to be configured correctly. I'm wondering if part of the system is thinking that it should use eth1 and the other wlan0 and as a result it doesn't work. Any suggestions?
            Thanks again
            John B.

              Re: wireless won't connect

              Hi John B.
Your reply just reminded me that I could not connect until I removed my all my Ethernet cable connections. It seems to me that only one internet connection is allowed. I assume that you have wpasupplicant installed. Hope this helps.
