Network Manager goes blank in 8.04 ??

I installed 8.04 yesterday and it's certainly an improvement
on it's predecessors. Gutsy was wonderful, but 'Hairy Hard-on'
    is even better!

The one snag is the 'net connection: I added the connection
info to the network manager, and hit 'Apply.' The system said
it was 'restarting the network.' I then opened Firefox and got
a blank screen. When I re-opened the network manager, all
    the connection info was gone.

I re-entered the date. Six times. Same result every time.

I'm guessing there's a file somewhere that's set to 'read only'
and should be 'read/write.' to save the connection data? Has
anyone else had this happen, and how did you fix it? H/H looks
like a wonderful version - but it's a Porsche with square wheels
    if I can't get online??

Any help would be much appreciated.

Get rid of KNetworkmanager and use wicd instead. It solved my network problems for good.

Nice idea, PJJ - but I've got no internet connection to download from any repos?? :-(

This is clearly a bug in H/H and the only way it can be fixed is if we can download
a Deb package from another computer that solves the bug, install that in H/H and
      get back online.

Does anyone know of such a package?? I downloaded wicd that way, but
on installation it tries to download four more packages -- over an internet
connection that won't work until it's installed! So it's useless.

Thanks for the help, guys -- this is making me nuts!

I too tried install kwlan and my networking vanished. What I noticed was that while installing kwlan it removed dhcdbd and I think there was something about libc6 too. Now if dhcdbd is gone I think your networking too is gone!!! At least in my case doing a 'ifconfig' showed only lo and nothing else. So thought I'd get smart and download the missing packages from packages.ubuntu.com but most of today 18 May 08 the site is inaccessible. To make short work of it will be reinstalling for the third time.
