    PIM Sharing and backup

    Hi there,

I recently installed Kubuntu KDE 8.04 and I'm loving it. There's quite a few things I need help with, but the most important ones to start with are backup / restore for:

    emails
    email account settings
    email filter rules
    address book
    calendars
    tasks
(I think that's it unless I'm forgetting something obvious)

Where are the files / folders located, and what are the most suitable schemes for doing it (i.e. is there anywhere that an incremental backup scheme is not possible or recommended)?

Also, something I would like to do is share certain resources, such as address book, email filter rules and calendars, across the "users" group?

    Any help gratefully received

Okay, I can't help you with everything here, but I can point you in the right direction for some of it.

Assuming you're using the Kontact suite for most of this stuff, the information you're interested in backing up is largely in the following locations (I've assumed you're using KDE4, because of the forum you've posted in, but you don't make that clear, if you aren't using 4, just drop the digit from the paths below):

.kde4/share/config - This folder includes config (rc) files for kmail, korganizer and kaddressbook Mail filters and settings are in the kmailrc, while kaddressbookrc and korganizerrc save particular settings for those programs. You'll only need those particular files, rather than the whole folder.

.kde4/share/apps/kmail - This folder includes all of your actual mail, and I think your account settings too.

.kde4/share/apps/kabc - this is where your addressbook information is stored.

.kde4/share/apps/korganizer - This is where your calendar and tasks are stored, as std.ics by default.

I don't thnk there are any reasons for not using an incremental backup policy (I've used one for a while and have never had trouble, but I've only restored on those couple of occasions that involved doing a complete re-install and copy over, which was preceded by a full backup just in case).

On the sharing front, I think you might be better off using some kind of groupware, but I know next to nothing on that front, so will say no more.

Yes, using KDE4. I'll give your suggestions a try. Thanks for your help.
