    Migrating to KDE4

Last time I tried KDE4, I had to reenter and reconfigure all of my application settings.
Is there a proper migration process now ? Esp. as 8.10 is going to come with KDE4.... (with no chance to run the more battle tested and stable KDE3 in parallel/instead)

    Re: Migrating to KDE4

First, as usual with any upgrade, back up your home directory, at least your~ /.kde folder (the hidden folder where all your kde settings and data are stored)

In Hardy, all KDE4 app data/configs are stored in /.kde4, while the KDE3 stuff is stored in ~/.kde, which is the standard folder for this. You needed to duplicate settings because all your KDE4 apps use the .kde4 dir so there is no confusion between 2 different apps using and modifying data in the same place.

You should be able to use your existing .kde in Intrepid 8.10 as (afaik) all your configs for, say kopete, kmail, etc are compatible with the newer versions. Obviously, your desktop settings (wallpaper, etc) may not cross over as well with the changes in that area.

My heavily tweaked kde3 system is still in a massive coma, so I have not been able to test upgrading yet, if I can get my pc up and running or at least get hold of a usb hard drive case, I will try accessing my old home dir and see what happens

Well, seems like the answer is 'maybe, we're confused too' :-) Would be interesting to see what happens...

I did boot the beta live CD last night, and KDE4 seems much quicker than when I tried it on 8.04, but if it's pick'n'mix as to what settings come across and what don't I might just stay on 8.04 as long as possible.
I think many people will be doing that.
