System Dead after updates (or upgrade)

I reactivated my Linux env. after 6 months (Hardy8.x+KDE4.x)! Accepted proposed updates. However, at the end a new upgrade was recommnded, I accepted resulting in a new kernel without GUI, command line IF only!

What should I do? Have tried different recovery options, without success! Re-building the old environment takes some time.... it was really good!

I'm sorry, I don't understand. At the boot prompt, you should be able to choose among all the kernels that you have installed. The problem is that the default timeout is now set to a generous THREE SECONDS. (I guess they're trying to keep the instant gratification folks happy.) In order to change this to a more reasonable value (I use 20 seconds.), you will have to edit a file called /boot/grub/menu.lst . Near the top, the third paragraph, is an entry called "timeout sec". Just change the number 3 in the bottom line of that entry to something more useful.

Most likely you upgraded your distro to jaunty (9.04)...
Do you have an older (or not so old) ATI graphics card?
If so, then you may have a driver problem in jaunty.

Otherwise I don't know... I'm not so happy with 9.04 as well, but I have not found a convenient way to revert to an older version.

yes, I think the upgrade is to janty, which might be the root cause! How can I seclect the "right" kernel?
I would like to come back to my "old" environment!!!

You can select Kernels in Grub... press Esc on the boot prompt...
But if you have the above mentioned ATI graphics driver problem, a different Kernel will not help you.

Just to clarify (in case you are thinking along these lines) simply booting the old kernel won't take you back to your old system. that has completely gone.

Have the machine connected to a wired ethernet connection.

There are a couple of possibilities for you. As stated hit escape immediately after gong through the bios. You will get at least 4 boot options (old and new kernel, and a rescue version of each). Pick the "rescue" option for the latest kernel.

You will should come to a series of prompts. select the fix broken packages option. That's just in case something has actually gone wrong in the upgrade. after that has finished (probably quite quickly as I suspect nothing went wrong in that regard) take the option of "fix x". Logic tells me that that is your best chance of a quick fix as there are significant differences between the configuration of X in hardy and that in Janunty. Once that is done (again should be quick) select resume normal boot. Do you then get to the kde login screen and then (hopefully) to the desktop?

i tried your recommendation (xfix, ...)and it almost "worked" KDE started but was closed after 2-3 seconds and the line command came up again asking for login.........

what should i do now! Its there but i I cant get it working!!!

I do have the ATI graphics board (it is a Dell P4 8250)....

If your graphics card was not prepared to give you at least some functionality, I couldn't see you making the login screen.

Can I just confirm, you have upgraded from Hardy to Jaunty (or intrepid)?

What you are describing suggests to me that you have a problem with your kde configuration. Can I suggest you read this:

From the login window select a terminal login. Then rename /home/<your user name>/.kde into /home/<your user name>/.kde.old and also (as the .kde folder in hardy was .kde 4) rename /home/<your user name>/kde4 into /home/<your user name>/.kde.old. Then try to login again. This will force the system into creating a new .kde file which hopefully will get you in. If you have any data for kde applications you can then copy them over into the newly created file.

It seem that i have upgraded to Jaunty BUT the system prompts Ubuntu 9.04....

tried your proposal, without success.

the system prompts "No resume image, doing normal boot... but I can see the kubuntu logo and move the cursor with the mouse during the startup/boot, but the GUI is still disabled, only comman line works!

What now, I dont remember I gave root a pw, but I am prompted or one.....

Ubuntu 9.04 is jaunty.

at the linux login type your user name and then hit return
Then type your password (we don't use the root concept in kubuntu) and hit return
Then type startx and hit return.

What message do you get?

could not start kstartupconfig4. Check yiour installation
however, the mouse is activated and some graphic panel with the meage as above!

can I start the network and get out on internet from the command line? Some pacakges are missing but I cant get them now!

If you have a wired internet connection, if you try a normal boot (even if you end up on the command line) you should be connected.

What packages is it telling you you are missing?
