    Gparted Partitioning

    Hello,

I am setting up a new hard drive to duel boot XP and Kubuntu. I have XP installed and am ready to partition the rest. Is it better to use gparted for all the partitions and then install Kubuntu into them?

    Thanks

    Yes. I think so.

Defragment XP, then run GParted Live CD to shrink the XP partition (as needed), create the partitions for Kubuntu, run the Kubuntu Live CD installer:
Step 4: Select Manual partitioning method
Step 5: Indicate where to put what (root /, home, and swap)

      Thanks Qqmike,

Yeah I have read probably just about all the posts, links and different ways to do this. I am still absorbing info including "How To Grub". With all I have read it seems like doing all partitioning with Gparted was the way to go but read so much info saying do it with Gparted for the first part then do all the Buntu partitioning in the install bla bla bla. One good thing is that with it all separatly partitioned off if I screw up the buntu install I can backtrack.

      Thanks,

Yes, keeping each step separate makes sense--nice user control and clarity. And GParted is completely trustworthy when it comes to this sort of basic, straightforward partitioning (as it is for industrial-strength jobs).
The new GParted Live CDs have the capability to do Labels, too, which is handy.

As for GRUB, I've recently completed a major revision/improvement of this:
