upgrading kernel without changing dist version?

    well.

in order to get proper also support for my card, i need to be running alsa 1.0.18 or better (current is 1.0.19). the relationship of the kernel to alsa is such that i could either try to burn a new kernel or i could upgrade kernel and kernel source to a level that includes newer alsa.

is there a repository that contains new kernels, etc.? not talking the occasional rebuilds of same kernel.

    thanks!

You can build your own kernel, there are plenty of how-to's out there for that, but the problem is that you would also have to rebuild yourself any drivers you may need that aren't included (ati/nvidia for example) and possibly more.

It might be easier and safer to build your own alsa instead, really, or find a ppa:

i've tried numerous alsa rebuilds and so on, now no matter what i do alsa reports it is 1.0.16 and, worse, *behaves* like 1.0.16.

i've burned numerous kernels over the last 15 years; what i don't want to do is break the packaging system.
