    [ABANDONED] new KB 8.04.1 install within WinXP quickly in trouble - help!

    [ISSUE ABANDONED DUE TO LACK OF RESPONSE; WUBI uninstalled from WinXP]

    On another thread, I'm struggling with a Kubuntu (KB) 8.04.1 install that went bad shortly after upgrade to kernal 2.6.24-22. As I relate there, while struggling with this problem I discovered that on my dual-boot machine, I could install KB somehow within WinXP, so that when responding to my initial GRUB screen and selecting WinXP, I then am shown a second GRUB screen which offers me WinXP again, AND my main KB install, plus my new KB install (with kernal 2.6.24-19, I think).

    I've fired up the 24-19 KB maybe twice. It lives within its own little 9Gb world, which is quite different from my main KB install. It appeared to be entirely functional. That was all yesterday.

    Now, while trying to get into my 24-19 KB, I encounter an error msg and a boot failure. The msg -

    "The following installation problem was detected while trying to start KDE. No write access to '/home/administratortc/.ICEauthority'

    "KDE is unable to start."

    I "OK" that msg and a small window appears, informing me "Could not start Ksmserver. Check your installation." Clicked away, we get back to the KB login screen.

    I tried a recovery mode boot into the WinXP/Kubuntu, then activated xfix. Returning to the KB login, I tried restarted the xserver, then signed in. Nothing has changed. (I was obviously grabbing at straws, clueless as I am.)

    I have no idea what the problem is, or what to do about it. I was hoping to get this other KB fired up and do some work in it. KB is failing for me on all fronts right now.

    I would appreciate any ideas anyone might have about how to respond to this problem.

    have you tried this yet
    boot into terminal from recovery screen and try
    CODE
    $ sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

    After a couple of minutes (depending on your connection) and you will be prompted by the installer to select the login manager, either GDM (Gnome) or KDM (KDE). I've selected KDM as themes for this login manager are a bit more interesting.

    Reboot the computer and at the login prompt, select Options / Sessions and pick KDE from the list. The rest is up to you. Enjoy!

    this may help ? not sure could be n issues with the kde desktop.
