    Kubuntu Hangs While Booting

I have no idea what actually caused the problem.

My machine has been running for a day or two maybe. I think I've done some package upgrades, am not sure if I restarted after or not.

But I restarted my computer to try the live CD for 8.10 to see how it looks on my desktop computer, unfortunately it crashed when I tried to enable the desktop effects.

So I started the sequence for safely reboot, but couldn't see the screen, the CD popped out & I rebooted my machine.

    Now my 8.04 won't start.

the loading bar never reaches the quarter phase. Then the CLI appears,

    Code:
    ....
    * Starting kernel event manager ... [OK]
    * Loading hardware drivers...
    udevd-event [3305]: run_program" '/sbin/modprobe' abnormal exit

    *Setting the system clock
    * Loading kernel modules...
    * Loading manual drivers      _
And it just stops there with the cursor blinking.

    When I do
    Code:
    Alt + Ctrl + Del
Many things appears such as shutting down phase I guess.

    But more interesting:

Many things about cannot create xorg.conf.failsafe: Read-only file system.
    Last message is:
    Code:
Warning: Could not generate /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe for vesa driver

    Fatal server error:
Could not create lock file in /tmp/.tXO-lock

    _
Help is needed ASAP if possible, this is my main system since I left Windows behind
So me got no backup system.

    Thnx

Ok, so I booted in the "Recovery mode"

There is this recovery menu, I thought let me use "xfix" to try to fix the X server.

    If failed,

    Code:
cp: Cannot create regular file '/etc/******
    Read-only file system
I tried to drop the root shell prompt

    Code:
    # dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
After I do all the steps.
    Same error appears.

    Code:
cp: Cannot create regular file '/etc/******
    Read-only file system
I even tried "dpkg" to try to repair broken packages.
But nothing happens, everything fails, it fails to resolve the website.
And many others such as "Unable to write to /var/cache/apt/

    then finished, please press enter.

Ammm, I guess for me, am stuck here.

Do you have any other LiveCDs such as 8.04, or Knoppix. Try some older LiveCD and see if you can poke around, perhaps run fsck on your hard drive, or see if one of your partitions is out of space, or anything else.

When grub first appears, try to hit "Esc", then select a "recovery mode" kernel. It should bring you to a command line. If you can get that far, then you should be able to look at log files, dmesg, etc. Try to look at the logs in /var/log first rather than trying to guess what may be causing the problems.

Ok I cannot say I've resolved the issue efficiently, so I won't declare this post as resolved.

What I've actually done is, I've downloaded 8.04.1 ISO image, burned it & reinstalled the OS "/"

So now it's working just fine, I hope. Downloading the updates now. And since the "/home" folder is in another partition, it's just amazing, all settings are still there. "This is not possible in Windows!"

            How can't you love Linux?!!

                Oh Yeah

                Edit:

But I think I have some leak from the roof :P -> "Some tweaks needed"

                  Re: Kubuntu Hangs While Booting

I am currently have this same issue. I have tried reinstalling from my 8.04 LiveCD and at the first boot everything is just fine.

Then after installing all the security fixes and the latest kernel is dies again. Trying to use the recovery kernel will not boot either. I know that I am currently on the .21 kernel after all updates are done and the last kernel I had that was working fine was .19.

I have not installed any new hardware on the machine and at this point it is just a piece of metal. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them, unfortunately I can't even review the logs because I can't get it to boot without reinstalling the root partition, which then takes it back to the .16 kernel.

                  Thanks,
                  -Eric
