    Switch user trouble

Can anyone please help me with this problem?
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 with KDE 3.5.10.
When I attempt to switch user the screen goes blank and none of the Ctrl-Alt-F1 keys work to recover the session and I then have to do a reboot.
This is what is recorded in the system log-

Nov 4 08:50:48 kmiles kdm[5301]: Display :1 cannot be opened
Nov 4 08:50:48 kmiles kdm[5301]: Unable to fire up local display :1; disabling.
Nov 4 08:51:08 kmiles init: tty4 main process (4850) killed by TERM signal
Nov 4 08:51:08 kmiles init: tty5 main process (4851) killed by TERM signal
Nov 4 08:51:08 kmiles init: tty2 main process (4855) killed by TERM signal
Nov 4 08:51:08 kmiles init: tty3 main process (4856) killed by TERM signal
Nov 4 08:51:08 kmiles init: tty6 main process (485 killed by TERM signal
Nov 4 08:51:08 kmiles init: tty1 main process (4660) killed by TERM signal

Thanks in advance for any help, Kenneth.

    Re: Switch user trouble

fwiw - I found my second user, to my amazement, in tty9, not tty8 as expected.

Having said that, I can use tty1-6 no probs, so this is not helping you... sorry.

OK, I'm confused. What happens when you use KDE 4.1? Or are you actually running 8.04?

dibl, you got! I missed it completely.

tty1-6 didn't work properly in 8.04 - another marvellous enhancement of 8.10 (well, back to normal, really).

Graphical users in 8.04 get given incremental ttys starting with 7 (i.e. CTRL+ALT+F8 for your second user, CTRL+ALT+F7 to switch back to the first one).

        HTH

My mistake, it is 8.04, brain going down.
When I have tried to switch users none of the none of the ctrl-alt-f* keys work and I have to ctrl-alt-del to restart the computer.
          Regards, Kenneth.
