I prefer doing my installations with the Alternate Install CD, but the Live CD is the one to use if you're not 100% sure your hardware is going to play nicely with Linux. You can boot the Live CD and test your audio, video, Internet, LAN, CPU speed, power management, and all that stuff, and make sure you're happy with how the hardware is detected and functions, before you install anything.

These Linux ISO images use extremely high compression algorithms, and so every bit has to be burned perfectly on the CD media, or it won't run or install correctly. Sometimes the part that boots and runs in real time is error-free and runs right, but then when the person starts installing it hits a bad bit and the installation won't go all the way. That's when we read a post on this forum that says "my installation hung at xx%". Some optical drives handle the task better than others - my Asus P1608 has only made one coaster in 2 years, so I'm lucky.

Aha! But I did that twice on two seperate burns! It was then that I found the first was duff, but the second good.

I just did a fresh download of the ISO, md5 checked, burned verified and install run with same result. The KDE X cursor on blank screen.

It does not like my laptop!

      Weird as 8.04 installs perfect?

KDE 4 has a new K Display Manager (KDM). There could be some issue with it. When it pauses on the "X" display, can you Ctrl-Al-F1 to a tty console? If so, log in there, and try a "startx".

        If that doesn't work, try
        Code:
        sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
        Then
        Code:
        sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start
Maybe it will run that way.

          Nope won't have it!

New CD burn again, CD checked etc and all clear

Run Live CD and it went into KDE which looks very swish

But when trying to install it hangs?

You see the black shadow of the bright blue progress bar repeated lower down to the right which lets me know it aint gonna work!

Then screen goes black and I get the X cursor.

ctrl-alt-f1 gives me a black screen with white text LOADING and it just sits there.

          nothing else works?

I guess I will stick with 8.04 as it works perfect and have had no error etc from it as yet. And as I only installed it last week.....I am happy to stick with it for now as I really want to crack on with Objective C and the KDevelop IDE rather than fight an install

          Pity, 8.10 does look sweet
