    How kool is Kubuntu?

So I installed Kubuntu 8.04 and was pleasantly surprised how advanced the install procedure has come since the last time I installed it a few years ago!

Then because I was having problems with ProjectCenter I thought I would try SUSE 11 and have XP, Kubuntu and SUSE to choose from.

Well the SUSE install is Rubbish...with a capital R

Not only did it take an age it doesn't even go to GNOME! just logs me into the shell.

A quick unistall and back to Kubuntu for me

Huh -- you think 8.04 is pretty good? You should try 8.10! Get a daily build ISO from here:

Thank You for that link, dibl.

I may well download that tonight and try the live CD....

To be honest, the official one i tried was broken from the start, and should never have been released, in my opinion.

I fully understand what a beta is, but that particular one wouldn't even boot the install program until i had re-started X twice.

Pardon my ignorance, but do tell about 8.10... Why is it any better? Don't tell me they've got OOo3 already!

              Well ...

Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll.

OK, maybe that's a little exaggerated ... "better" being such a subjective characterization.

My personal opinion, based on my 8.04 experience, is that KDE4 is integrated considerably better in 8.10, whereas for 8.04 it was painfully and obviously "nailed on", and awkwardly attempts to share the system with the KDE 3.5 that is part of 8.04.

No OOO 3 yet. I got all excited last night upon observing a large OOO upgrade coming in, but it was not 3, it was just 2.4 improvements, I guess.

                Re: How kool is Kubuntu?

Mmm 8.10 not much good for me?

I have downloaded the ISO, md5 checked it, burned it using K3b and verified the disk which reported all ok but install hangs.

I goes all the way to the end of the blue progress bar then I get a load of zigzag garbage on the screen, the hdd chunters away along with the cd and all I have left is a black and white X cursor.

When all activity stops all I can do is reboot!

8.04 it is for me then

                  even more mmmm.

I actually see now that 8.10 is currently BETA and reading the 8.10 forum there are a lot of users having problems some of which match mine!

As 8.04 installed effortlessly and runs a treat I will stick with that for now

                    Re: How kool is Kubuntu?

Well.... to be honest, perhaps i got a bit carried away earlier...

Anyway, as i was getting a bit out-of-practice at re-installing....

It installed flawlessly - the second time, at the first attempt the installer couldn't see hda at all, and insisted that it was going to stuff everything on hdb.
I thought - well, give it another chance, so re-booted.

There were no problems at all, and the only flaw i've found so far is that it insists on booting into a low-res desktop (about 900x?), but now that it knows what i like (1280x1024), as soon as i select the Display tab it puts itself right without my telling it to.
Which is a pleasant change from my previous experiences, when it locked the system so solid that not even skinny elephants would re-boot it.

I've just installed Firefox and Thunderbird with Ubuntuzilla (i copied the previously-downloaded files to /temp - cheapskate that i am ), and clicking on a link in Tbird brought up Ff instantly.... no hacking about:config files this time.
Scrolling pages is also much smoother - even with the window effects all turned on, 8) but it's still not as smooth as 3.5.10... at least, not on this system.

I can't tell about wireless, etc., i haven't got it.

I don't know if i need to install extra drivers, nothing appears on the Hardware Driver tab to enable, but everything looks Good... so far (touch wood ).

If anyone's thinking of installing, i think that the upgrade after install was around 170Mb.... My ISP loves me.

                    a quick p.s.
Amarok only needed the mp3 support added, it seems to be fine.

Prolly this is where it went wrong. The "verifier" sometimes tells lies, so you can't trust it. And I'll bet you did not slow down K3b to a 4X burn speed, with "DAO" mode, which is what you need to do to get a good burn. I think you have a bad installation CD there.

Is this a Live CD, or Alternate Install? If Live, does it boot and load correctly?

                        Re: How kool is Kubuntu?

I've been using 8.04 since the beta was out and now I'm dual booting with 8.10 beta and 8.04

8.10 (alternate) allows you to install a private encrypted directory - I use dm-crypt and a whole partition and from what I've read about ecryptfs, it's not finalized yet, although, nothing wrong with trying it out and helping to improve it.

I'm impressed that Dolphin on 8.10 allows me to delete files whereas Dolphin on 8.04 used trash which was sometimes a pain to empty (it wouldn't).

Adept on 8.10 seems to have changed so much, I actually went back to synaptic and have been using the terminal to install individual programs I wanted that weren't on the CD.

Can't say that I like the wallpaper on the KDE 4 desktop - I put my own in quickly.

Both 8.10 and 8.04 installed with no problems, detected all of my hardware and work well.
They are stable, secure, speedy and do allow me to do all that I want to using a notebook.

Thank you for that informative piece of info.

What really pisses me off is that - once I'm in KDM - all my tty screens 1 to 6 are inaccessible! Has 8.10 got rid of that annoyance? Anybody know?

It is the live CD I could not find the Alternate one?

If i may say so, never, ever, believe K3B... or any other burner when it comes to burning .iso files.

When the disc is loading, select the Check CD for defects option.... that one will not lie.
