    Monitor reset to 600x480 [SOLVED]

I just installed HH, and after 99 upgrades/updates to the version I'd burned to a CD, had the desktop configured pretty nicely with my own background photo and the old Sony Trinitron 17" monitor set to 1024x768.

When I restarted the machine after its all-night upgrading, though, the monitor came on at 600x480, with a purple (no photo) background and, of course, huge icons and text. System Control has apparently identified this as the monitor's maximum resolution, so it will allow me to REDUCE but not increase it.

How do I reset the display to this monitor's true maximum resolution?

If you are using Hardy don't log in to your normal kernel. Boot into Recovery. That has an option to "Try to recover X Server." Try that.

Thanks! That did it... next thing is to see if it holds through the next restart!
