Reformat without reformatting [SOLVED]

Every time I screw up, I thought formatting was the answer, such as the using the compiz-fusion problems or not being able to install the w32codecs on kubuntu 8.04 64-bit and other stuff, and I am tired having to reinstall everything again.

Is there a way how to make a restore point or a way how to rollback to a previous point?

slightly off topic, but you should install w64codecs instead of w32codecs if you use 64-bit system.
