Can't install Kubuntu - video too bad to read

I am switching from Freespire to Kubuntu 8.04.1. I am still a newbie, but not completely frustrated anymore.

Anyway I put in the disk and the video at the start is very good, but after the Kubuntu screen with the bar floating back in forth finishes it goes all fuzzy with streaks through it. It is not even clear enough to finish the install and try to fix it. My guess is that Kubuntu has tried to apply a driver and it doesn't work.

I have a Pentium D desktop with VIA Chrome9 HC IGP integrated video.

I have found a ton of posts that cover problems with this driver and how to install a replacement. My problem is I can't even get Linux installed to replace the driver.

Anyone else have this problem, or know a way to stop Kubuntu from installing the bad driver at initial setup?

when the cd first boots, select 'safe mode'. I also think you can select different resolutions to try using (iirc) the f4 key at the boot prompt.

That will boot you to the generic runs-on-any-card Vesa mode, then you can run the installer

      Thanks for the tip.
After you select your language there is an option at the bottom of the screen to press f4 and then you select safe video. I expected a very low rez screen when the install completed, but It actually came out with a very high resolution.
Everything works great. Thanks a lot.
