Daily Show Flash Video Won't Play

Firefox 3. YouTube videos play but this one requests that the latest Adobe Flash Player be installed.

    http://www.thedailyshow.com/

Sure would like to watch the Daily Show online. Do the videos work for any of you?

    Nope.

FireFox 3 says I have Flash ver. 10, so the rejection on the site is their problem. BTW, same problem on cnn.com, except theirs hilariously says I need at least Flash ver. 9, but it appears I'm running Flash ver. 10!

In Firefox 2 (in 8.04), it works fine.

Ok, thanks for the feedback guys. Hey, I just tried it with my laptop using FF3 and KDE 4.1. Guess what? It worked perfectly but it does not work on my desktop. Both machines are running Hardy with all updates. The only difference is that I was running KDE 3.4 with my desktop.

              Noobishness is cool!!

Go to the Firefox extension pages:

              https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:7

Select to download the flashplayer, there are some instructions available, but they are not too bad. As always, if you get stuck, we're here .

Got the tar archive and extracted it. I just had to search a bit to find the right path to my Firefox 3 install. After a couple of false starts I got the plugin working. Thanks very much for the help.

Ok, more problems for me guys on this subject. My wife's machine works perfectly but I still cannot get my desktop to work. In addition to the Daily Show I really need to be able to view http://www.stormpulse.com/hurricane-ike-2008 and other storm related sites. My laptop works and my wife's machine works. Obviously I am the tinkerer and should have just left good enough alone. Any thoughts?

I have installed the Flashplayer from the suggested site. I have FF2 and FF3 on this machine. Perhaps I should remove FF2 since by now FF3 has all the capability I had in FF2. Any thoughts on how to clean things up and a way to get the player running?

This is what shows up now with aboutlugins

                    Code:
                    Shockwave Flash

                      File name: npwrapper.libflashplayer.so
                      Shockwave Flash 9.0 r124

                    application/x-shockwave-flash Shockwave Flash swf Yes

Re: Daily Show Flash Video Won't Play

I'm running Firefox 3.0.1, installed by Ubuntuzilla, no Ff 2.x, this is from my aboutlugins (thanks for that, something new every day ) :

                      Shockwave Flash

                      File name: libflashplayer.so
                      Shockwave Flash 9.0 r115

                      MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled
                      application/x-shockwave-flash Shockwave Flash swf Yes
                      application/futuresplash FutureSplash Player spl Yes
.... plus lots of other guff and gubbins.

I have no problems watching any of the sites mentioned, i just tried stormpulse - no problems.

I installed the Flash by extracting the archive, then dragging the flashplayer.installer into a console, and i think i added some bits-and-pieces via Adept, not too sure though....

I don't know what to suggest, other than maybe to un-install Firefox then delete the directories etc, and try installing it with Ubuntuzilla....

                      Edited to add:

One thing that is important, if you use NoScript, whatever site you're visiting has to be allowed, and Flash enabled (it is disabled by default).

Re: Daily Show Flash Video Won't Play

Thanks. I have not installed noscript just yet for my FF3. Of course, I use it all the time with my FF2. Firstly, I think FF3 has evolved enought that I no longer need FF2. So, first step I will uninstall that. Then I might start fresh with FF3 as you suggest except I have lots of addons already and various toolbars such as Webchunks. Oh lordy why don't I just leave well enough alone and stop my endless tinkering.

It may be worth seeing if they are compatible, many things seem to be.

"Oh lordy why don't I just leave well enough alone and stop my endless tinkering." .... that's what makes Life interesting.

I've stopped doing that myself now -- i haven't had to re-install for a whole week.

You are right about making life interesting. Well, I have removed FF2. No change. I uninstalled a number of addons in FF3. No change. Interesting that the sites play on my wife's Kubuntu install, and on my laptop. I have not tinkered much with either of those. It seems to be something I have done on this machine.

Re: Daily Show Flash Video Won't Play

Progress? I disabled all of my addons in FF3 and at least now I get the Adobe "Get Adobe Flashplayer" logo. I didn't get that before. So, there is some interaction with one of the addons.

The installer works but I get the following. I am searching for the file and found several instances of it but none in a components folder"'

                              Code:
NOTE: Please ask your administrator to remove the xpti.dat from the
components directory of the Mozilla or Netscape browser.
...and enabling the addons one by one and restarting reveals that "Feedly" interferes with the page displaying the Adobe "Get Adobe Flashplayer" logo.

Adblock plus interferes with the display of the logo.

                              Aboutlugins reveals:

                              Code:
                              Shockwave Flash

                                File name: npwrapper.libflashplayer.so
                                Shockwave Flash 9.0 r124

                              MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled
                              application/x-shockwave-flash Shockwave Flash swf Yes
                              application/futuresplash FutureSplash Player spl Yes
So that looks ok. Could it be that xpt.dat file somewhere?
