Re: Daily Show Flash Video Won't Play

Well i'm glad that you're making a little progress.

I never touched the xpt.dat file, it is still here somewhere....

I forgot to mention Adblock Plus.

That is good to know. I never touched it on my other machines either. When I installed the plugin file, libflashplayer.so the installer wants to put it in the .Mozilla folder in my home directory. I installed it there but didn't get any results so I think it needs to go somewhere else. I'll keep searching.

Re: Daily Show Flash Video Won't Play

As i recall, all it says is something like:
        flash was installed to home/.mozilla

        Another installation? Y/N

and when i answered N, it said something about the .xpi.dat file, at which point i killed the Console, logged out and back in, then went to the Flash site to test it.

I also ignored the order to delete the xpi.dat file. Just checked the stormpulse.com site and it is now working even though I get the Adobe Flashplayer logo on the Jon Stewart site. Interestingly, during my last test Stormpulse worked and then when I revisited the site it did not. I exited FF and opened it again and Stormpulse worked. Still no joy on "The Daily Show" though. Some progress.

            I wonder..........
If you have installed it to the home directory did you do so as user or as sudo? If you did the latter, it may have created an access rights problem perhaps?

Whenever I have installed flash plugins I have installed them to the /usr/lib firefox (or Mozilla) directories. Have you tried installing the one in the repositories?

Good thoughts. I installed the libflashplayer.so as myself and not as sudo. I guess I could make sure by giving it a chmod 777.

I did have the one installed from the repositories but I don't think it worked. I believe that is what started me down this road but I will check.

Interestingly, I have three folders in /usr/lib . They are firefox, firefox-3.0 and firefox-3.0.1. Don't know if that would make any difference or not.

Re: Daily Show Flash Video Won't Play

my flash plugin is installed in the plugins directories of /usr/lib/firefox and /usr/lib/mozilla. I don't have one in the home directory file.

So if you run the script you got as sudo and installed to the 2 directories in /usr/lib paths it ought to work. (Fingers crossed!)

http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/view...nalId=tn_15507 reports the proper flashplayer version installed. All other sites including Adobe seem to play properly. I am puzzled regarding the Daily Show site not playing.

I've got the repository version of flash player 9 installed and that site works fine for me, so I'm baffled.

I am going to remove them all and install the repository version and see what happens.

Re: Daily Show Flash Video Won't Play

                        With only the following installed:

                        Code:
                        Ubuntu restricted extras
                        Rank:
                        Package: ubuntu-restricted-extras
                        Commonly used restricted packages
This package depends on some commonly used packages in the Ubuntu multiverse repository.
Installing this package will pull in support for MP3 playback and decoding, support for various other audio formats (gstreamer plugins), Microsoft fonts, Java runtime environment, Flash plugin, LAME (to create compressed audio files), and DVD playback.
Please note that packages from multiverse are restricted by copyright or legal issues in some countries. See [url]http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/licensing[/url] for more information.
Nothing seemed to play. So, I ran the Adobe installer and put it in my /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.1 folder. Stormpulse runs but now The Daily Show crashes my browser. I think my desire to watch episodes of the Daily Show online is beginning to be not worth the effort.

That's the wrong package I'm afraid.

You need the package flashplugin -nonfree which is in the multiverse repository.

That is a script that will automatically run, download and install the flashplugin. Here are the details about it from within adept

" This package will download the Flash Player from Adobe. It is a Netscape/Mozilla type plugin. Any browser based on Netscape or Mozilla can use the Flash plugin. This package currently supports the following browsers: Mozilla, Mozilla-Firefox, Firefox, Iceweasel, and Iceape. Also Galeon and Epiphany can use the Flash plugin. Konqueror can also use the Flash plugin if konqueror-nsplugins is installed.
WARNING: Installing this Ubuntu package causes the Adobe flash plugin to be downloaded from www.adobe.com. The distribution license of the Adobe flash plugin is available at www.adobe.com. Installing this Ubuntu package implies that you have accepted the terms of that license."

Try that - works for me

Ok, got it. I installed. Restarted FF3. Thedailyshow.com still crashes my browser. I fear I am getting wrapped around teh axle on this one. At this point I need to take a break. I don't know what i have installed and what I don't have installed. I have put enough time in on it this morning. Everything works except that now thedailyshow.com just shuts FF3 down with no messages.

Decided to just search for the problem, thedailyshow.com closes firefox, and I found the solution.

                              SOLVED:

                              apt-get remove libflashsupport

                              Now it works.

Conclusion: anything to do with pulseaudio should be removed.

Thanks Mario for the help. You saved the day!
I don't understand it but I am happy because it works.
