a sound problem

I am new to the Linux world, i have a problem with sound
i cannot play any sound file, but the system can play it's sounds and alerts
it plays the start up and the end music
i tried more than one program, they all failed
i will be pleased to any one who will help me

what player you're using? All audio/video player doesn't produce any sound?
