Non System System Disk? Kubuntu 8.04

    Hi all,

I have downloaded and was just trying to install the Kubuntu system when I hit a problem. The cd boots ok and gets to the point just after it installs the keyboard type when the following error message comes up:

"CDRom drive contains a CD that can't be used for installation. Please insert a suitable CD to continue with install"

What's the go? I am assuming it boots and installs off the CD as do most other operating systems. Any help much appreciated.

    Matt.

you can install *ubuntu systems in a number of ways.
including off a desktop (live) cd.
so, yes, it should install just like any other operating systems.
(btw, are there live install cds for windoze?)

in the past i've seen issues with:
    - badly burned cds
    - overheated cdrom drives

but i don't have a clue as to what might be the exact cause of your problem here.

if you have a good network connection (i'd say from 2mb/s up)
my choice is always to use the minimal cd.

    gnu/linux is not windoze

Which .iso are you trying to install from?

It can't be done with the alternate install, you need the desktop .iso from here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/hardy/

Burn it at 4x, as well as auto, and on the initial screen, select "Check Disk" before installing.
      Two disks.... just in case.

      I hope this helps.

Thank you all for your prompt replies. That has given me something to think about. I'm downloading the .iso as suggested by aged hippy and we'll see how it goes. I didn't realise burning cds was such a delicate process!

A bootable CD to run an operating system has to be bit-perfect --- zero errors can be tolerated. Music and videos can tolerate the occasional bad bit.

Despite the "Burn at 4x" always quoted, i tried this when moving from Gutsy to Hardy, and K3B produced 6 new coasters for me, so i tried it at 2x and got another 2.

Burning at "Auto" produced a fanfare and "Success!".

              YMMV. Good Luck

                Agree some with aged hippy.
One variable--often missing in people's thinking--is the quality of the disk itself.
Verbatim disks used to be considered good, and maybe they might still be--open question (as many know, they used to be made in Taiwan, which is good; now by Moser-Baer, India).

                Safe bet (one to try):
                Taiyo-Yuden DVD+R and CD-R discs.
