Really need help, Install screen is frozen

Hi, I downloaded kubuntu last night and burned a disc... my computer is an Acer Aspire 3620 laptop, and I was tired of how bad xp runs so I thought I would just dump it... I read over stuff on linux, kubuntu, ubuntu, and felt ready. I have been using firefox, and other things that linux uses for years, anyway I am a fast learner, so I was not worried.

But now my pc is frozen at the Welcome screen for the Kubuntu install. It has English selected and Forward is greyed out. I can hear the cd running and can't take it out. Anyone online now who can help me?

Install screen wasn't frozen, its just EXTREMELY slow to install this. Phew. Also I went on the IRC and they helped me at #kubuntu.... thanks anyhow.

It should say somewhere that it could take 5-10minutes between each part of the installation...

I'm concerned that you might have a bad, or marginal, CD there. It should not go so slow, unless there's some issue with your optical drive.

You need to burn the downloaded ISO image slow, at 4X speed, in "DAO" mode, for best chances of a good installation CD.

I agree with Dibl. I have and ACER Aspire 3618 and it is fast. A lot more so than XP. How much memory is in your system?

Here is the info... my pc is still frozen.

I did burn the DVD at 4x, btw... but I don't know what 'DAO' mode is.

Acer Aspire 3623 (3620 Series) Notebook
          Intel Celeron M 1.5GHZ, 400FSB, 1MB L2 Cache
          -DDR2 RAM 256 MB
          -Hard drive 40 GB
          -DVD/CDRW COMBO DRIVE
          -Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900
-LAN & Wireless LAN 802.11b (Atheros AR5005G Wireless Network Adapter)

Hope someone can help.. I am worried my only laptop will never work again!

I just realized something... should I have put this in a different part of the forum? The newbie section? Sorry about that.

Don't know if this is the problem or not, but 256MB RAM is fairly low. You really need to consider taking it to at least 512MB. I personally would go to 1GB.

Re: Really need help, Install screen is frozen

With regard to the "frozen" thing, review this:

              http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3088251.0

Whenever you make a CD from a downloaded ISO image, you need to use the md5sum that is on the web site (separate file in the same directory where you got the ISO) and verify that the downloaded ISO on your computer is an exact match. That's the first step to make sure you don't end up with a bad CD.

Some, but not all, CD burning software applications have a "Disk At Once" or DAO mode. Using that, in conjunction with a slow speed of 4X, gives you the best chance of an error-free burn of the ISO image.

There is also always the possibility of a defective blank CD -- it happens. So even the best efforts with a md5sum-checked, slow DAO-mode CD can still end up as a coaster.

If you are comfortable with a decision to install Kubuntu on your hard drive and you kinda-sorta know what you're doing, you might consider making the Alternate Install CD, rather than a Live CD. It uses a text mode installation process, but I like it better than the Live CD, for some reason. I think it actually has more packages on it, since there is no software to run the GUI on it.

Re: Really need help, Install screen is frozen

Hopefully this is not Linux blapheny, but I went on the #kubuntu chat and got help on cancelling the install. I thought it might be the cd, so I turned off my pc, took the disc out.

Then since I had burned other OS (Mandriva and Symphony) I tried out the Mandriva instead and it took 5 minutes, and its installed! So it must have been the cd I burned for Kubuntu.

I will try reburning it but for now I think I will just use Mandriva since it works....

                Thanks for everyones help.

Thanks Moonrise, I was worried everyone would be pissed for wasting their time.

I will be trying it in the future so I'll be around.

                    thanks again

No worries -- the goal is to get more people using Linux, whether Kubuntu or another one.
