SOLVED loading grub... suddenly takes much longer

    Hello,

It first loads itself, then comes the dual boot menu.
But it takes almost a minute before the kubuntu splash screen finally comes up. Used to be much quicker.

This is a machine with a dual boot with xp, could that be related? Though I did not use xp for weeks now, it's only for some games.

    Any thoughts on this?

Re: loading grub... suddenly takes much longer

    It somehow (tm) corrected itself.
    Here's what happened:
I decided to boot xp to defragment c:\ but I wasn't quick enough so ubuntu (default in grub) booted again.
But this time not into kde but giving me some errors and then a command line.
Unfortunately I don't remember which errors, doing cat /var/log/messages | grep error only lists 'ACPI: Looking for DSDT in initramfs... error, file /DSDT.aml not found.' but it does so every time.
So i did sudo reboot and this time there was no dealy whatsoever from grub, but when the kubuntu splash appeared it started checking the boot drive (does that every 200 startups).
It then told me it had corrected errors but wanted to reboot.
After reboot is well again. No more delays from grub whatsoever.
So I guess it was something with the boot drive.

Re: [NOT SOLVED YET] loading grub... suddenly takes much longer

      It's still there.
I had 2 boots that were normal. Now the same again, grub takes over a minute to load it's stages.

      Any ideas appreciated.

        Hmm, just read this http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=52678
And indeed, if I take out the usb drive the delay is gone.
If this happens consistently I will mark the thread solved again.
