New features not visible after upgrading from Kubuntu 8.04 to KDE 4.1

I gang I am really new here so please be gentle with me!

Total noob to Linux and KDE but I like what I see... but I think I should see more after upgrading to KDE4.1

Over the weekend I performed the upgrade without too many hassles, however I haven't noticed any changes in appearance the desktop etc from Kubuntu 8.04.... the only change has been a 'prettier' login page. Is there something I have missed when upgrading?

I have a minor issue in that I cannot make any changes in the etc folder..... I am denied access!! I am the only user and I thought I selected admin privileges during initial installation

    Cheers....Hawkeye

At the login screen, there is a button which activates a menu, click the menu item which reads "session type", choose KDE4 there and then login, you will see the difference.

Alt-F2, type "kdesu dolphin" will give you a window in which you can have admin privilege. But IMO this is strongly "not recommended" because it is too easy to ruin things in a GUI. use the sudo command in konsole is much safer.

      Hey pansz,

      Super fast reply...thanks!!

I'll try your suggestions when I get home tonite. Reason I need to access the etc directory is to copy my Thunderbird profile.

      Cheers again!! Hawkeye

kdesu is for KDE3, if you use KDE4 you may need "kdesudo" instead of "kdesu", or try both and see which works.

Due to in part to path 'issues' in KDE 4.1, to gain sudo privileges, open a console and type:
          Code:
          sudo su
When you are finished, just type exit to return operating as your regular user.

            Cheers Guys...thanks for the advise!!

I logged into 4.1 and tried and liked it.....however (sigh!!) I messed things up a little by fiddling too much and now cannot modify the panel/task bar and I seem to inadvertently deleted it.

Basically I don't have the K button and the clock etc are now locked to the left of the task bar. Also no running apps appear in the task bar.

How can I correct this (or not!!).

Will I need to uninstall the 4.1 upgrade and reinstall it? If I need to uninstall I'd appreciate the 'How to..'
