THe desktop is shown in a called "Desktop". All icons are in the window and none are on the wall paper underneath. How do I get my desktop back?

You might want to try by renaming .kde to .kde-old and then restarting X.
This will rebuild the various configurations that are in .kde and hopefully solve your weird problem.Comment

Right-click within this 'window' and select Folder View Settings > Show the Desktop FolderWindows no longer obstructs my view.
