    error message(s) when upgrading kde 4 -> kde 4.1

I am not sure if it is a good thing to be back from vacation, but anyway, I decided now was the time to hack my laptop with the fine wine of summer (I hope) kde4.1 official release (I generally don't do betas, but I am eager to follow up an official release, especially on my laptop).

I read this proclamation on the kubuntu website:
    http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.1

and followed the instructions for those with kde4 already installed. (Note that I installed kde4 shortly after my initial kubuntu 8.04 kde 3.5.9 installation, tried it for a few days and then found something I just couldn't work around, reverted to kde 3.5.9 and haven't checked in a kde4 session login until now...that is, if I could only get past the installation.

    I followed the instructions, added
    Code:
    deb [url]http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu[/url] hardy main
    to my /etc/apt/sources.list.

    Then I did
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    which completed without errormessages.

    Next, I said
    Code:
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
    this did not complete successfully.

Here is the complete response to the konsole window after the downloading part.

I ran into something similar and did:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-kde4-desktop -f
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install kdebase-bin-kde4
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install kdebase-bin-kde4 -f
I hope that points you in the right direction and welcome to the party

Re: error message(s) when upgrading kde 4 -> kde 4.1

Uhm, this was kind of exciting...here's what I get:
      Code:
      sudo apt-get install kubuntu-kde4-desktop -f
      and the machine said...
      Code:
      Reading package lists... Done
      Building dependency tree
      Reading state information... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
       kdebase-runtime: Depends: kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4 (= 4:4.0.3-0ubuntu2) but 4:4.1.0-0ubuntu1~hardy1~ppa1 is to be installed
ksysguard-kde4: Depends: kdebase-workspace-libs4+5 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libplasma2 but it is not going to be installed
kubuntu-kde4-desktop: Depends: kde-window-manager but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
Well, any suggestion from my computer may or not be a good one, so I tried
      Code:
      sudo apt-get -f install
      and my apt then replied:

      Code:
The following extra packages will be installed:
       kdebase-plasma-kde4 kdebase-runtime kdebase-runtime-data kdebase-workspace-bin kdebase-workspace-data
       kdebase-workspace-libs4+5 libplasma2 libqt4-webkit
      Suggested packages:
       kdebase-workspace-wallpapers
The following packages will be REMOVED:
       libplasma1
The following NEW packages will be installed:
       kdebase-plasma-kde4 kdebase-workspace-libs4+5 libplasma2 libqt4-webkit
The following packages will be upgraded:
       kdebase-runtime kdebase-runtime-data kdebase-workspace-bin kdebase-workspace-data
4 upgraded, 4 newly installed, 1 to remove and 78 not upgraded.
38 not fully installed or removed.
The installation as outlined above completed successfully (but I guess I -f forced it to do so, right?)

I then followed the rest of your instructions. I experienced no further error messages during installation and the last
      Code:
      sudo apt-get install kdebase-bin-kde4 -f
      was actually not necessary.

(testing kde4 very soon and expect more posts if it doesnt work!)

      thanks, Fintan!

This is what it looks like. I get a login screen that does not have a background image. That's just cosmetics, and I assume I will be able to tidy it up. When I log in and the desktop loads it is definetly KDE4 and I like the desktop - but when I start applications it seems I get the KDE 3.5.9 version of....let's say for example the konqueror client from which I am posting now (kde 3 app running in KDE 4 desktop, windows etc). Does anyone get the KDE 4 Konqueror version?

            Hi
I get a similar problem. I had the exact same issue installing 4.1 on the latest RC of 8.04 which seemed to come with some of the KDE packages but not the complete shabang!
Trying the update code my dpkg error (1) code related to the kde windows manager not installing properly. So far I have not been able to rectify this - but will try modifications of the suggestions here!
However I can "log in" to KDE4 session - with the new desktop but I get variable versions of the prgrams (KDE3 & KDE4). I also find that if i start a KDE3.5.9 session the KDE4 apps are still present in the K-Menu.
            This is slightly untidy IMHO.

Re: error message(s) when upgrading kde 4 -> kde 4.1

Not all apps have been ported to kde4 yet so there will be some kde3.5.9 apps left for the time being.

And depending on how you installed kde4.1 (was there a kde3.5.9 version present, did you replace it or install in "parallel" ?) you may have some kde3.5.9 stuff left over anyway.

Open up adept or synaptic (if you don't have it install it with:
              Code:
              sudo apt-get install synaptic
              and look for everything kde4.

              You need these packages:
kdebase, core applications for the KDE 4 desktop.
              kdebase-workspace, a basic KDE 4 desktop installation.
              kdemultimedia, metapackage includes multimedia applications.
              kdenetwork, metapackage includes networking applications.
              kdeutils, metapackage includes general-purpose utilities.
              kdegraphics, metapackage includes graphics applications.
kdepimlibs5, core libraries for KDE PIM 4 applications
              and kdm
              or
              kdm-kde4

              depending on how you installed.

              Also look for konqueror.
If the version is 3.5.9 then you still have the kde3.5.9 version.
It should say version: 4.1.0 something.
              If not then find konqueror-kde4.

All if not most of the above will become redundant when intrepid is final as it will be kde4.1 / 4.2 only..

I used the install instructions from the Kubuntu website - it seemed to infer that KDE4.1 could exist alongside KDE3.5.9 - something which I took to mean 2 seperate entities once in the respective session.
I have 2 versions of some apps (both KDE3 and 4) both of which show up in the KDE3 session K-Menu...

Was there another way to install KDE4.1 beside KDE3 to avoid this duplication of apps in the menu?

(even though I still have to get it working properly!!)

Re: error message(s) when upgrading kde 4 -> kde 4.1

Well, that is what I meant above.

If you installed "parallel" to kde3.5.9 some apps will be double as they are not replaced by the kde4 version (if available) but left untouched.
Was there another way to install KDE4.1 beside KDE3 to avoid this duplication of apps in the menu?
                  So, no.

Haveing you apps in kde3.5.9 and kde4 versions can be a good thing as not all apps have been ported to kde4 and some that have been are still not extremely stable so you always have a fall back

I also find that if i start a KDE3.5.9 session the KDE4 apps are still present in the K-Menu.
                  This is slightly untidy IMHO.
You can always use kmenu editor in kde3.5.9 (right click on kmenu) and edit it so that all the kde4 stuff is in a kde4 folder.

Hi guys and welcome to my thread, DrNic

I don't think we have quite the same problem. I have kde 4 kind of successfully installed, but the only KDE4 application I have been able to start so far is Gwenview for some reason. For all the rest (including a supposed KDE4 hallmark like Dolphin) my KDE 4 K-menu only gives me the option to start the KDE 3 version.

It is the equivalent of buying a WV Golf, only to find all the parts are actually WV Beetle stuff, I mean it is only the packaging that is KDE4 with me. Every single moving part is beetle stuff (OK this was a little bit exaggerated and insulting towards KDE3 that has served me well for years but if I ever owned a beetle I guess it would drive me to work too...)

Has my K4-menu somehow been corrupted to only contain the K3 stuff?

                          Quote from above:

If not then find konqueror-kde4, or konqueror version 4.1
HP Pavilion dv6 core i7 (Main)
                          4 GB Ram
                          Kubuntu 18.10

In a rather odd upgrade experience, over the past few days KDE4 is creeping in on my computer very gradually. I think all the files were installed at the start, but it seems like it has taken the system a few runs and reboots to register that it is actually a KDE4 system now. For example I had konqueror KDE4 on my computer but the KDE4 start menu started KDE3 konqueror. Yesterday that suddenly changed and now I am running KDE 4 konqueror.

I am not sure if this is the reason, but from the KDE 3 K-menu I manually deleted all the KDE4 entries a while ago (before 4.1 release, I found the KDE4 stuff too "beta"). So, if the KDE4 K-menu at the start inherited program entries from the KDE3 K-menu it wouldn't find any KDE4 stuff, since I deleted it. It is just a possible explanation I am not sure it is the way it works.

By the way, is it possible to get a proper authentication for the KDE4 repositories? apt always complains that the packages are not authorized.
