After the latest update, I get the following message when my desktop is initialized:
The newly installed kernel is 2.6.24-16-generic, but I don't know how to get any other information about the version. The update that led to the problem was installed on July 29, 2008.
Logging in and logging out again gets me my desktop back.
This message has been cropping up for years off and on. It is particularly frustrating because there's no obvious way to respond to it or know what is really going on.
