Hostname changed after recent update to Kubuntu 8.04.1 SOLVED SEE HOW

After a recent update from Kubuntu 8.04 to 8.04.1 and following updates I noticed that the hostname has changed:

    Was: pjj
    Now Is: 76

    Looks like: pjj@76:~$ Strange?

I suspected that it has something to do with the upgrade. Ran rkhunter.
    Warning received.
    Host name changed from ...to

Several file also were flagged. The ID of the old and the new files did not match. Old files replaced with newer versions?

Does anyone know whether this is normal?
And how to change the host name back?

    Also ran chkrootkit. Nothing found.

    don't know what happened.
the host name is in /etc/hostname.
    change that back.
and also check what /etc/hosts says.

      Thank you for the info.

The file host name shows an IP beginning with 76.

That's where the '76' comes from.

"hosts" still has the correct host name.

I will check my other Kubuntu installation (also 8.04.1) to see how it looks there. It was correct when I last looked.
      Will report back.

        good.
        fyi...
/etc/hostname should simply have a host name.
        no ip addresses or anything.
        just a name.
        cheers.

Re: Hostname changed after recent update to Kubuntu 8.04.1 SOLVED

Thank you for setting me straight. The problem is solved.

I changed the info in 'hostname' to what it was before the problem occurred.

Thereafter I could not get into HH at all. Error: Incorrect host, DCOP server not running?

Went back to my other HH 8.04.1 installation.
Searched DNS given as 'host'. It was a DNS from my wireless router socal.rr.com!!

A light went on in my head.

During a misguided and finally aborted attempt to make my 2 computers share files on the wireless home network I had entered that IP as 'host name' .

From my running HH I opened file hostname and changed it back to the (undesired) IP address as host name.
          Application now opened again.

Next: Konqueror, open and edit file 'hostname' to reflect desired host name.
Then: Access system Settings, open Network Settings, go to wireless settings, open tab Domain Name Settings.

There it was: Host name as IP of socal.rr.
          Erased it.
          Save and exit.

          Now HH starts flawlessly again.

And the correct host-name is now also displayed in the appropriate tab of Network Settings.

So, it was all my fault.
But then, I am allowed to stumble a little once in a while.
After all, I am only a beginner.
