How to get NVIDIA nforce 520 driver?

I tried it before on this forum in March this year, but no solution available. So I restart the thread.
I am unable to install hardy heron on my computer with nforce 520 chipset and jbod disks. I land into the busy box and can't get out again. The reason is that hardy heron does not provide the n_sata driver. Gutsy gibbon installed o.k. on this system as it contained lots of main board drivers including the n_sata driver.
Does anybody know how to extract this driver from the gutsy gibbon cd in digestable form for installation with hardy heron? Or does anybody know where on the internet this driver is available?

If you go to Nvidia site, under downloads/linux you will find the driver disk which includes drivers for fedora, suse, and rh. But the source code is included.
You might want to attempt to use those drivers ( or compile it yourself.

If you could get copy of the Red Hat driver, which ends in ".rpm", then you could use alien to convert it to a .deb, which might just work for you. alien is in the repos.

Re: How to get NVIDIA nforce 520 driver?

On this machine I can only access hardy heron with vmware as a virtual machine. I have downloaded the latest zip file from the nvidia site, unzipped and converted the latest red hat driver using alien into a deb file and saved it on floppy disk. The file is called: nvsata-rhel5u1-3.4-1.25.x86_64.deb.
Then I restarted on the installation cd of hardy heron opted for modus: use driver update cd. When I start the installation I am asked for the driver cd. When I push enter it starts reading the floppy drive for quite a while until the flash screen disappears and a blinking cursor pops-up for eternity.
So I guess this does not work.
There is one thing I really don't grasp. Kubuntu had a working driver in gutsy gibbon. Why didn't they add that one to hardy heron?
The suggestion to compile the source code I do not understand. If it is a kernel driver you need to have a working kubuntu distro but that the one I don't get installed.
Or are there other ways. Please give more info

If you are running Kubuntu in a VM, then you can only use video drivers that are supported by the VM's virtual video display, right? AFAIK you can't set the VM to run on your real video card, as that is being used by the underlying OS that you are running the VM on.

          Or am I confused?

I did not phrase it very clearly I am afraid. Because I can't install hardy heron and wiped gutsy gibbon, the only way to use alien is to install hardy heron as a virtual machine. Of course you don't need the drivers there. I only did it in order to make the rpm/deb conversion.
Because of the very limited possibilities of the virtual machine I long for the normal kubuntu installation

Right, this is probably not very helpful, but from here I can see two solutions to your problem.

              1) install gutsy and be done with it
              2) remaster kubuntu using uck to include the driver (either from within vm if you have enough space or from gutsy).

              Right, I warned you

              Good luck

What is the n_sata driver, anyway? Are you sure a "cheatcode" or boot option, such as "acpi=off noapic" won't get you past the hard drive issue? Just shooting in the dark here, but it sounds like a painful way to get to an installable OS .... :P
