    Can't upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy

    I tried to follow the instructions here,
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades/Kubuntu

    tried both from the CD and from internet.

    Tried CD because in Adept I don't get "Version Upgrade" button to light up. It's always greyed out.

    When I tried "cdromupgrade", I got the error, "can't upgrade frm n/a to hardy heron"

    So, the question becomes, why is my system not being seen as Gutsy Gibbon?

    TIA

    Are you sure you have the 'alternate' CD? If it's the LiveCD, this isn't going to work.

      Re: Can't upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy

      There are instructions for upgrading to the new distribution?

      I am surprised, because it really is a no-brainer: Open adept, click "Fetch Updates", then hit the big button named "Version Upgrade", and there you go. Easy and intuitive.

      Except it doesn't work.
      In fact, it never worked for me before.

      However, for the last two upgrades, I could "trigger" the upgrade in adept and then do an "apt-get upgrade" to get the new distribution manually. That always worked for me, however with Hardy that seems to be broken too now.

      BTW: Is there yet another tool for installing the nVidia kernel modules this time? So far with every new Kubuntu release, the tool from the last upgrade was broken and replaced by a newer fancier one. Oh, don't bother to tell me, I can deal with nasty surprises ...

      Sorry for trolling. Kubuntu has been my favourite distro for years, and still is. If it wasn't "the best", I wouldn't use it and troll somewhere else instead.

        Have you tried in the konsole:
        Code:
        kdesudo adept_manager
        Any error messages ?

        Here:
        kbuildsycoca running...
        kapture::PkgSystem::PkgSystem()
        debconf
        adduser
        sysklogd
        snort-mysql
        oinkmaster
        kdecore (KProcess): WARNING: _attachPty() 12

        sysklogd
        snort-mysql

        kdecore (KProcess): WARNING: _attachPty() 39

        What tells (example with my GG KDE 3.5.8):
        Code:
        kde-config --version
        Qt: 3.3.7
        KDE: 3.5.8
        kde-config: 1.0
        Code:
        uname -r
        2.6.22-15-generic
        Code:
        lsb_release -a
        No LSB modules are available.
        Distributor ID: Ubuntu
        Description: Ubuntu 7.10
        Release: 7.10
        Codename: gutsy
