super nwebie tradgedy...Vista OS not booting or even installing again

    Ok I need help.
    Made a royal cockup here.
    firs time on this forum....
I an attempt to install Kubuntu on my XP Vista Ultimate 64 dual boot system. I simply formated the XP 32bit partition to install Kubuntu there. I have had no reason to use XP for some months now.
To my dismay i also removed the bootmgr file so now Vista cannot boot!!
Slapped in my Vista Ultimate 64 CD but no windows based OS shows up!!!! Nothing to repair. The partitions are still visible through the windows install utility with drive letters and all.
Had no choice but to install kubuntu seeing it is also a 64 bit version. I was not able to view the other partitions via kubuntu or create a boot command.
I even tried repairing vista by manually rebuilding the bootmgr but the command prompt via the Vista CD was not able to Identify the vista drive letter.... thus could not create a boot file.
So I simply had no choice but to format the Vista64 bit partition and try to reinstall vista.
To a greater surprise none of my partitions were able to support the installation of windows vista or even XPpro!!!! This is the message I get from vista installation screen. None of the partitions meet the requirements of a vista installation!!! Amazing since I have had windows based systems running on on this same PC up to the morning of the misshap...

I should just format and recreate partitions from scratch. But some there in this mess is one partition still intact with all my family pictures and my documents backed up. I simply cannot get it out!!!

Is this a ubuntu corruption of my system files

Can't you access the Windows file partition (what's left of it) through Dolphin? Go to /media/ and your hard drive should be listed there. Click on it (usually named C) and enter your administrator password if prompted.

You will have to use a live CD to rescue your data from the good pictures partition.
Live Kubuntu CD or a Knoppix Live CD.

Sounds like you don't need this now (too late) but just in case:

(something about having to use the Vista partitioner to do all this, or some such quirky requirement)

        Ok
I managed to fiddle around an moved files from one hard drive to another via the kubuntu live CD. I very useful tool. Rebooted with one hard drive only did a complete scrub with the vista CD and reinstalled Vista 64. Just with the minor loss of some downloads as a deleted my fox download folder in the format. Dodged a major bullet.

While I would love to get more into the ubuntu /kubuntu/linux world I think I need to learn alot more about the command line coding and bootmgr, grub boot etc.
This was just too scary for me,,,

thank you for your great support
Will be back in a couple of years... :P

That's what the link is for that I gave in Reply #2.
Step by step ... how to get them installed together, Vista, XP, Linux.

            Hey Mike,

I used to keep them on the same hard drive, but I've found that putting Linux on a different harddrive than Windows eliminates many headaches. Use the computer's boot memory to select which OS.

Kev -- I figured Vista folks were used to headaches, and one more boot headache wouldn't matter that much to them ...

                LOL!!!!!!!!!

There are MOMENTS when Vista seems to work well... but there hasn't been a single time that I've booted back into KDE without breathing a sigh of relief. I remember the fear I had switching from XP to Linux... I have the same fear now every time I boot into Windows.. funny eh? I guess it's mostly about what you're used to.

But Vista... I have turned automatic updates OFF.. why then in the middle of mixing the radioshow that needs to be delievered in three hours does Vista want to install them oh and that's just the nice stuff.

I have the same feeling, Bongo5HH. KDE really makes me calm in some weird way. I know things can be broken, but it always seems less bad than in Windows (or Mac OS X, for that matter). I am even getting used to KDE 4 (stable). It does fix some longstanding bugs.

I'm running KDE 4 DEVEL and it's been great. I'm not really stressing the system though...

Vista will never be installed on anything I own. I've fiddled with it on a friend's laptop and decided it sucks.
