    Latest Upgrade Errors?

    Dual booting laptop with XP/Hardy

I just did the latest upgrade (kernel 2..6.24-19) and it screwed up my menu.lst big time. (I selected to use the package originators menu.lst instead of keeping my own) After the upgrade upon reboot I got a grub error 22 (no such partition). Well I popped in my handy dandy hardy live cd and took a look at my menu.lst. Somehow my hardy install was changed from (hd0,1) to (hd0,4).

Fortunately I had backed up my old menu.lst and was able to see the change. So I sudo edited the new one in kate (after mounting the partition) and changed it back. I thought that would fix it. Rebooted and the blue slider popped up and just went back and forth for a long time. I noticed no HD activity so I went through the edit process again.

This time I noticed that the UUID was different also! WTH? So I copied and pasted the old UUID to the new file and all seems well.

    Anyone having similar issues?

I could have helped you, but I have recently discovered that this forum's moderators CENSOR anything that is not within strict, orthodox, narrow rules.

No jokes. No fun. No observations.

So, no more help from me sir.

      That's a helluva story. :P

The only way to change a UUID is to re-format, re-partition, add, or delete a partition. Updates and new kernels won't do that. So, something else went on there, besides a kernel upgrade.

That is so far away from anything here...I won't even comment further apart from saying that if you can help do it.

"ebtech: I have never seen that kind of behavior and concur with dible. But am maybe not so surprised, based on by biased attitude towards the uuid system.

Maybe a bug report at launchpad is in order:

Yea well I've always hated that blasted UUID stuff myself. I usually change it to hda1 etc. as soon as I finish an install but it seems like they've been updating the kernel every 15 minutes here lately :P

I'll look into filing a bug report. Now to see if my desktop gets screwed.

Update: Happily my desktop did not suffer the same fate, however this time I kept my own menu.lst :P
