Fixed shutdown bug, now battery monitor not working

I just installed Hardy. My system didn't shutdown properly, so I applied the fix found on jerrylamos's post here: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-628109.html
(I would have posted this there, but it appears to be closed.)

That fixed the shutdown problem, but now my battery monitor is gone. I tried installing a couple of battery monitor programs; all of these show that my laptop is plugged in with no battery when, in fact, I am running on battery power.

    Can anyone suggest a fix?

    Thanks.

With ACPI turned off, a lot of battery monitors don't work. I installed the klaptop package and got a simple monitor back onto my laptop. Of course I'm running Gutsy, but the package should be available for Hardy also.

Specifically which CD of Hardy did you install? On what hardware?
I installed the KDE 3.5 version, from the iso desktop image. Toshiba Satellite laptop.

I saw this on the Bug report:
"Turns out that ACPI was my problem. I force enabled it and it now shuts down correctly. I suppose it's the BIOSs fault for not identifying it's year? It's from 2005."

        https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/119308

Everywhere that "fix" told you to set it too acpi=off, change it to acpi=force.

Leave the apm=power_off. for the time being. If it works with acpi=force, then try removing the apm=power_off as well
