    23.446317] Kernel Panic - not syncing : Attempted to kill init ! [SOLVED]

    Hi all, me again.

    I upgraded my P4 from 7.10 Hardy to 8.04 Gutsy and all was working fine untill today.

    All of a sudden I get :

    23.446317] Kernel panic - not syncing : Attempted to kill init !

    *On a second attempt I get:
    Starting up ...
    24.063081] incomplete literal tree
    24.063131] invalid compressed format (err=1)
    24.064933] Kernel panick - not syncing: VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)

    None of the post I found really made sense. Can anyone please help in plain english?

    Specs = 2,8Ghz P4, 1Gb Ram, Dual boot with 2 hard drives, 1 = Vista, 2 = 8.04 Gutsy.

    We have some people here who may know how to do this sort of surgery.
    My guess is that it involves initrd and update initramfs.
    I'm batting just 75% doing that successfully and it can mess things up now and then.
    Sorry not to be or some help here.
    My personal Rx these days:
    Upgrade by installing * fresh * from Live CD, not from Adept.

      How long ago did you upgrade to 8.04? Have there been kernel updates since you did the upgrade? Basically, I'm wanting to know if you have more than one kernel version to choose from in your Grub boot menu. If you do, try booting using the previous version and report back if that works okay.
      Windows no longer obstructs my view.
      Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

        I have the following:
        Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-18-generic
        Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-17-generic
        Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic.

        Tried Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-17-generic and gets:

        Tried Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic. and gets:

          Hi All,

          Replaced RAM and problem solved.
          I am able to boot again.!!!!
