    Reinstalling Kubuntu 8.04 remix KDE4

In first couple of hours after installing Kubuntu I managed to get it screwed by what it seems bug. Which is when on kde4, you play with visual setings. And on loading, you log in, and hear the welcome sound etc.. the picture hangs, and it becomes totally black.

I figured the best thing for me now would be to reinstall it. But how? On the same partitions I would like to reinstall it, I have Vista.. on the other partition. But everything was fine before I touched damn visual efects

If you're new to Linux in general, the experience of reinstalling Kubuntu may not be a bad thing to do -- we call it "practice".

However, probably all you really need to do is boot into "recovery console" and issue
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
to get a working GUI display again. If you have an ATI or Nvidia graphics chip, you need to search on "envy" and find the instructions to download and use that driver installer.

If you decide to re-install Kubuntu, you can do that on the same partitions where you installed it the first time, unless I'm missing something in your description of the problem.

Well I did reinstall it just now. And I deleted all Linux partitions, created exactly same.. and it seems to work now. But I will for sure not touch any visual effects.

btw.. any idea on that problem so far?

The system settings > monitor & display (or whatever it's called) is a not-well-developed attempt to put a Windows-like master display settings capability into the KDE desktop. It works, kinda-sorta, if you are using a VESA display, but it often trashes the display when one of the more advanced graphics systems has been detected and configured. It's really kind of a nasty trap for the unwary new KDE user, IMHO.

        What is your graphics chip?
