    Kubuntu kernel and VM

At work I have Kubuntu Hardy installed in Virtual Box on a Windows XP PC. I can boot into Kubuntu fine using the 2.6.24-16 kernel but if I try 2.6.24-17 or 2.6.24-18 kdm seems to crash and after what seems to be it trying to restart kdm a few times it just hangs and eventually goes black.

I've never run Kubuntu in a VM, but what you are describing sounds like the classic "kernel upgrade breaks previously-working video driver" symptoms.

You might try booting the newest kernel in recovery mode and then, in the Konsole,
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
I forget -- if recovery mode takes you to a "#" prompt, then you can skip the "sudo" part of that command.

I just gave that a try but had no luck. The only error I'm seeing while booting is "Not starting the K Display Manager (kdm-kde4); it is not the default display manager"

After that message it tries to open kdm about 3 time before giving up.
