    [SOLVED] KSynaptics Won't Install -- Help!!!, Why??

    OK. Decided to finally update my laptop to 8.04 via network. Did great. Smoothest update via this method I've done to date. Any way, there were quite a few things that it did not update or just simply removed. I was able to get a few back on. One however remains stubborn. That being "ksynaptics" for the mouse pad. Whenever I tell it to Install, it will not change its status to be installed. Has anyone else run into this issue? Can I download that from the repos myself? If so, what is the address to go directly to the repos. Why is it doing this?

      Looked through all the KDE sections. Wasn't there. Odd. I'll go to the developers home page. Maybe they'll have it there.

        Earlier:

        Topic: KSynaptics removed from repositories
        http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3092754.0

        => http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=468905
        i request removal of qsynaptics and ksynaptics as it's abandoned upstream in
        favor of TouchFreeze. I plan to maintain ToucheFreeze.

        Have you tried to download and install Gutsy ksynaptics ?

        => Ubuntu Packages => Package: ksynaptics (0.3.3-2ubuntu1)

        Usually you can use packages from the older version (IF dependencies don't forbid this).

        Bug #208802 in ksynaptics (Ubuntu) [hardy] ksynaptics missing from repositories
        https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...cs/+bug/208802

        Using Gutsy version (package compiled in the Gutsy) in the Hardy.

        I can confirm the gutsy version does work in hardy

        I have upgraded from Kubuntu Gutsy to Hardy.

        Previously in Gutsy my Ksynaptics works just fine. but when updgraded to Hardy, it doesn't seem to have any effect. It doesn't do anything when I changed the configuration in Ksynaptics.

        This is just the way that Hardy seems to be handling the xorg.conf file. It seems to remove many sections I guess "autoconfig'ing" everything. Of course you can revert back to the older way of doing things.... Look at the attached config file to get an idea of how to go about this...
        Before you edit, BACKUP !

          Ahhh...An answer I can understand. DIdn't know that KSynaptics was abandoned. Pity. Good App. Has anyone used TouchFreeze? I'm willing to try new apps if it behaves similarly. That is, disabling that dang touch pad!!

            Read a bunch of bad reviews of TouchFreeze. Downloading KSynaptics now. Oh Well.

              Well, I can say the one from the Developers site didn't work all. Kept arguing that Shared Memory wasn't enabled in X when it is. Uninstalled that and found it in the Ubuntu Repos. Installed that and it appeared to work. Would let me set things in the settings menu and even the Ctrl-Alt-Q key combo appeared to turn it off, but it didn't, the Touch Pad still functioned normally, so there is still a fundamental change in 8.04 that it doesn't know about. Bummer. I'm amazed that they would omit something like that without a replacement in the Repos. Couldn't find TouchFreeze there. I can't stand this mouse pad interference. I wish they had place a way to at least turn the freaking thing off. >

                OK, my last post on this. Found gsynaptics in Adept Manager. Installed that and ran it from Alt-F2. Was able to turn it off from there. A little manual, but it's off.
