Kubuntu 8.04 gone ? - but slower PC

    Hi all,

    Situation :

Intel x86, dual core, 1 GB RAM, NTFS, 300 GB hard disk
    Windows xp Professional SP2

Yesterday I downloaded Kubuntu (and burnt it into DVD) Hardy Heron.
When I tried to install it, I was told the computer would reboot, which it did not. When I booted the computer manually, I remarked it started Windows xp much slower, but also I had no screen about Kubuntu. I restarted a few times, but nothing visible happend.
So I presume Kubuntu installed something (what ?) invisibly. I do not know what, I do not know how to repair my computer to the status quo ante.

    Has anyone a clue ?

    Thank you very much.

    Your post unclear:
    1) Did your computer booted the DVD started Kubuntu, and then when you were in Kubuntu did you installed it.
If you did that then something is wrong with grub, you have to go back to live session of Kubuntu and install it manually. This is done via Konsole, you write this in Konsole:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install grub
    2) If you never even get to the live session, you have to go in BIOS and change first boot device to CD/DVD. To enter BIOS you press delete at start-up of your computer.
    3) If you installed it through WUBI, uninstall Kubuntu and try again (it should be under add/remove in windows)

    I hope this will help

Thank you very much for your reply.

No, I did not see any screen about GRUB, I do not even know what installer has been used. When I started from DVD, all I got was a black screen.

When I booted my computer, I got, as always the Windows xp start screen, and no screen on which I could choose between Windows or Kubuntu.

I can't go to a Linux session at all.

My computer started very much slower though.

I don't know if you found a solution to your problem? I am taking in consideration that you don't have much experience with Linux. You can download a boot cd utility called super grub http://supergrub.forjamari.linex.org/ and see if it can find a grub menu for your installation if it completed successfully. Although, you may have to try again with your install, there shouldn't have been any issues such as this if it were successful.

          You should try:
          2) If you never even get to the live session, you have to go in BIOS and change first boot device to CD/DVD. To enter BIOS you press delete at start-up of your computer.

Also check which DVD did you downloaded...
Did you downloaded alternative or live. And is it 32 bit (i386) or 64 bit (amd64).

If this still dosen't work, download ISO for CD and burn it at slowest speed possible (8x), and then try again...

Thanks for your answers. And indeed, I'm a newbie in Linux. So I'll first go to the Supergrub page and try to use this program. I'll report on that later.

            Thank you,
