Re: My Initial experience with Heron/KDE4

On reiser, yes it's disappointing, but maybe the work will be continued on it by others. Reiser has been very reliable for me and fast. I've never used xfs.

Me too ... EXCEPT for handling a 10GB virtual disk for VMware (.vmdk file). Every once in a while, it takes a looooooooooong time to close the VMware Player session, and gkrellm tells me that the /dev/sda disk is very, very busy the whole time.

I still have two reiserfs partitions on my system, but they'll be changing to ext3 in the near future. I agree -- too bad about Hans and the future of reiser4.

But ext3 is really pretty good for general purposes, in my experience, and ext4 will appear one of these days and be compatible with ext3 partitions. So ext3 is probably the way 99% of folks should go.

@IG, if you're looking to distro-hop into some of the "fringier" distros, here are two I can recommend:

sidux 2008-01 -- Debian Sid, with KDE

elive -- this one features Enlightenment E-17

Thanks for the suggestions, dibl. elive looks commercially oriented, though - which is fine, but not what I'm looking for. I'll have a look at sidux.

Have you ever compared reiser to xfs? Especially with lots of small (OS) files?

I've never checked it out, but OpenGEU (formerly Geubuntu) is an Ubuntu derivative that uses E-17 as its default desktop environment.

          Oh, and there's also gOS
          Asus G1S-X3:
          Intel Core2 Duo T7500, Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT, 4Gb PC2-5300, 320Gb Hitachi 7k320, Linux ( )

I haven't personally attempted benchmarking experiments, but here are a couple of excellent references, by a guy who actually did the benchmarking:

integr8e, thanks - now I have a lot of reading to do. I have a few extra partitions so maybe I will play with some of these.

dibl... I guess that answers my question. Now I just have to interpret the data! Thanks for the links.
