Install without modifying current grub [Solved]

This is how my HD looks like

sda1 feisty
...
sda7 hardy alpha

I reinstalled feisty, so it currently handles the menu.lst.
Now, I want to install Hardy on sda7 but I don't want it to handle grub, in case I decide to wipe that partition. How can this be done? Thanks.

Use the regular Desktop Live CD to install HH.
In Step 4, Partitioning, select the last option Manual.
Step 6 -- slow down! Click Advanced button at lower right.
That's where you specify where to put GRUB.
Note that the default says (hd0)--which means, as you know, that HH GRUB & menu.lst would take over the boot menu.
So, to prevent that, tell the installer to put GRUB in the HH partition:
(hd0,6)
i.e., GRUB is now in the boot sector of the HH partition and not in any Master Boot Record.
No harm in doing this at all; in fact, there's an advantage (technical: you will be able to chainload HH in an emergency ).
Then come back to the screen in Step 6.
If you are done & certain, then click Finish to install HH.

Note: GRUB counts from zero. So
sda7 = (hd0,6).
The first hard drive is hd0; the 7th partition is partition 6 (counting seven partitions: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).


If you do ever mess this all up, it's easily fixed without re-installing Kubuntu:
